Show CRUSHED TO DEATH robert stewart meets with a horrible tate the utah central depot wag the scene of a shocking and fatal accident this morning resulting in the death of brakeman robert stewart about am the unfortunate roan was engaged in the yard and was in the act of coupling cars he had cone in between two boxcars at a place just northwest of the passenger platform where there is a switch he made the coupling and his fellow brakeman frank bailey who was en top of the car noticed that young stewart did not come out from between the cars as he should have done and signaled the engineer to stop what had happened was unknown to the train men who realized that something was wrong from the fact that several parties who had witnessed the affair were running toward the cars under one of which was an awful sight the unfortunate brakeman in going along between the marshed car shed caught his left foot iu a frog so tightly that it was held there while the brake beam of the car struck him on the back of the leg throwing him forward to the ground and partly outside of the track the heavy wheels rolled up along the limb which was badly twisted tearing the flesh and crushing the bone as it went from foot to hip with the exception of the knee joint which had reached over to the inside of the rail the entire leg was crushed to a pulp the wheels kept along on his left side catching the left arm treating it similarly leaving it at the shoulder the four wheels of one car and one of the next passed along the body of the unfortunate man when mr bailey reached him he was making an effort to get up but was still caught in the track and of course with his terrible injuries was unable to do so when mr bailey took hold of him he exclaimed ive got if noar frank dont let them butcher me he was per factly conscious and must have suffered severely but not a complaint escaped his lips he talked freely of the accident and had an idea that only his leg and arm were injured but did not want them amputated he was removed to the station warehouse and shortly afterwards taken to the hospital his injuries were of sucha character however that be was beyond all surgical aid about 11 he asked for and was given a drink of water and at 1110 breathed his last the deceased waa a native of scotland whre he joined the church and came to utah he was employed for some time on a stage line in idaho bat for the last five years has been a brakeman on the utah central he resided with mr bankin in the fifteenth ward having no relatives in the country it is said eliat his mother is still living in glasgow where his sister recently died he bore an excellent character and had many warm friends he was about 28 years of age the remains were taken charee of by undertaker wm taylor arrangements range ments for alie burial have not yet been made when completed due notice will be given of the funeral no blame for the sad occurrence attaches to the railway company or its employees it being purely accidental news march 6 |
