Show TAFT PLAYING FAIR WITH HMPPfliEiTS Divides Census Patronage in Solid South Between Democrats Demo-crats and Republicans. RISVEKLY-, Mass., Aug. 13. At an extended conference tonight with Secretary Sec-retary Nagcl of the department of commerce com-merce and labor, Postmaster General Hitchcock and L. Dana Duraud, director of the census, President Tnft approved the appointment of i!30 supervisors of the thirteenth census. The list had been prepared at Washington Wash-ington for the president and the qualifications quali-fications of every man inquired into. There has been marked discontent among some southern .Republicans over the president's decision to divide the census patronage in the "sojic south." Colonel Cecil Lyon, Republican national na-tional committeeman, came all the way from Texas to tell the president that lie would rather have the stato put in chnrgo of one supervisor a good Republican, Re-publican, of course than to have divided di-vided the congressional districts with tho Democrats. Colonel Lyon said the declaration of this policy on his part held good for all the states. The states where supervisors are divided di-vided oqually between the Democrats and Republicans arc Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas, President Tnft appointed Charles A. Ovorlock of Douglas, Ariz., as United States marshal for that territory. Mr. Overlook succeeds Hen F. Daniels, a ''Rough Rider,'' appointed by President Presi-dent Roosevelt. Mr. Daniels has been appointed as a sort of superintendent or chief of police on the Indian reservation reserva-tion "'at Menominee, Wis. Coincident with the appointment of flic Arizona marshal the president received an invitation in-vitation lo visit Douglas on his forthcoming forth-coming trip. The invitation was beautifully beau-tifully engraved on a copper plate and sent by the hands of Postmaster General Gen-eral Hitchcock. Among the appointments of census supervisors announced tonight arc the following: New Mexico Paul A. F. Walter. Arizona Franklin W. Towle. Oregon First district, Robert ,1. Hendricks; Second district, Seneca Beach. " Wvoining Homer Merrill (Rep.) Utah Hugh A. McMillan (Rep.) |
