Dr. Joseph l- Merrill, director of Ihe stale seiiool ol" mines at the University of Utah, lias decided to extend the period pe-riod for rot'oiviiic applications for the Wall research fellowship in mining for next year until May 15. This fellowship was established several sev-eral years ago by Col. K. A. Wall to encourage en-courage research in some branch of mining, ore dressing or metallurgy. Tho scholarship amounts to enough to am-.ply am-.ply cover the expenses of a student during dur-ing a school year and is awarded at tlic discretion of the university faculty. fac-ulty. In order to be eligible tho applicant must be a graduate of a college or university uni-versity of recognized standing nnd must be qualified to undertake the work of a. technical nature. During tho school year the holder of t he fellowship must bo a resident of the University of "Utah, devoting about one-half of his time lo res en roh "work and the remainder to tho pursuance of whatever courses lie may select. If not known lo the faculty committee commit-tee on award, the applicant iuust send testimonials as to his character nnd ability and also an abstract of his scholastic, record. The award is to bo made "to (he young man who seems his work this spring the successful research work in one of tho three subjects sub-jects named.'' The present holder of the scholarship scholar-ship is K. P. Holt, a graduate of the University of Oregon, who is doing some very exhaustive work in the cyanidn-lion cyanidn-lion of silver ores. M.
