Show , i I-IEBER'S FALSE QUOTATION. j The Tribune has committed the error I of accepting Ihe word of a Mormon apostle. For this we plead no excuse, as our experience should have taught us better. We refer to Apostle Grant's complaint in the tabernacle, which he made on Tuesday, April 6, 1 !)()!, and wordcil us follows, according to the Deseret News of that day: A certain local paper delights in publishing publish-ing tho words of President Brigham Young, that his people had among them men of as bad habits as could be found anywhere; that same paper, however. 1ih persistently refused to add that President Voung said, "HuL with the help of God wo will rid ourselves of them."' Assuming I hat Apostle Grant would at least confine himself In the truth in a matter wherein any departure from it would expose him to ridicule, The Tribune has treated the affair as if admitting ad-mitting (hat somewhere in that sermon President, Young had actually made use of-the expression attributed to him by Mr. Grant. But we now ask this p're tended prophet, seer, and revclalor to point out. to us where, in the serin hi delivered by Brigham in the tabernacle on November !, 1S56 (a verbatim report, re-port, of which appears in .loitrnal of Discourses, volume l, pages 7o to SO.) the words, "But with tho help of God we will rid ourselves of them." occur. NO SUCH WOP.DS APPKAJt IN THAT SERMON; NOR IS THERE ANY SENTENCE OB PARAGRAPH WHICH COULD BE CONSTRUED AS HAVING BEEN .INTENDED TO CONVEY THEIR, MEANING. And The Tribune positively refuses to recognize the. right, of Apostlo Grant to fake an expression from any other sermon if the. words given by that purveyor of falsehood do indeed anoear anywhere else and inject them into this particular address, in which Brigham Brig-ham so unmercifully scored his. people. The Tribune will not descend to the low tricks of Grant, ami the Dcscrco News, which latter nol long ago printed print-ed a page of purported extracts from sermons of President Young that positively posi-tively could not bo identified in Ihe Journal of Discourses because of the frightful manner in which they had hcon chopped up and garbled, wirhout even the saving grace of a single, asterisk fo take the curse from the vicious decepfion. But; we think we can inform th- public" as to what, was the object of Apostle Grant in thus lying to the whole conference last, week (and upon this same matter ho has repeatedly lied). First, he depended upon the circumstance that very few Latter-day Saints possessed the Journal of Discourses; Dis-courses; second, that those who did possess tho work would accept the word of one of. "tho Lord's anointed" that, ho quoted correctly nnd would not therefore Jook the ninttcr up; third, the ignoranco -of a great part of' his audience would protect him from condemnation, con-demnation, even if they were told that j he had misrepresent od the facts, so ! long as he had "hit. The Tribune a I rap." His objure was to attempt fo J discredit this paper. It appeared fo The Tribune that it was rather an unreasonable thing that j Brigham Young, in a sermon the burden bur-den of which was a boast of superiority superior-ity of the elders in all things, good J and bad, because of their possession of the priesthood, should talk of driving out, these men of such exalted rttain-nieuts. rttain-nieuts. And so, having L-t thv; singing I apostle ami the Deseret News go about 'as far as was necessary, we concluded j lo investigate. And we find that j APOSTLE GRANT UTTERED A BAREFACED AND UNPARDONABLE UNPARDONA-BLE LIE; there is nothing of the sort in that sermon which Giant claimed to be there; and no such language in it. as ho fraudulently quoted us being in it. Now, if .in a maticr of (his nature the biornrehs will so v-'.ioanly misrepresent misrep-resent I he facts to the Mormon people, what Ihjuk you. is I her? on e.irth rl-at they will not descend lo in oricr to "reprocess" their ro.l-r, system for the purpose of making it passably gulpablc to their follov.-i jg anil supporting support-ing dupes? Meantime. Apostle Gr.tn. has demonstrated demon-strated to a nicoly that, Uf'ehom Young spoke the unvarnished truth when he declared: "We h.xvc the greatest, great-est, nrjd smoothest, liars in the world, " For (he reason that we would further fur-ther demonstrate the unreason of Apostle Apos-tle Grant in making his false presentation, presen-tation, we will quote a little more from tho sumo sermon of Brigham Young, the expression reproduco-l here being in complete refutation of any assumption assump-tion that President, Young had any intention in-tention at that moment of ridding the community of the saintly scoundrels of whose presence in the church he boasted. boast-ed. This is lo be found on page 70, volume J, Journal of Discourses, as follows: The kingdom of heaven Is like unto a not that gathers fish of all kinds, therefore there-fore YVT" MUST HAVE THE GOOD AND THE 13AD IN UTAH, Oil ELSE IT .
