birthday more cordially welcomed than within the limits of that thrifty yet seemingly insignificant barg of pleasant grove though compelled as it were by circumstances to fall short in our demonstrations of artillery air elaborate display of military and t rong of imported orators we more alian made good the absence of these minor necessities by the loyal and patriotic spirit eliat animated every soul yes indeed with us it was a day of pleasure and reverence a day when all dis erencen eren ces religious political and of any other nature wore hurled into oblivion and a libarty patriotic and independent shake of the fiand was the result the fact alone that all were american citizens was sufficient to guarantee friendship of he most endearing nature but few moments passed from the evening of the ad until the morning of the fourth that were undisturbed by the discharge of fire arms ami when morning began to dawn the firmament was in constant commotion by a renewed and more fierce repetition of the same the principal streets of the city were serenaded the daywan yet in its infancy by the martial band over whom the stars and stripes were seen carelessly to wave ilow only by the gorgeous apparel and womanly beauty of the goddess of liberty moment inter mounted the chariot they were then drawn by twenty six horses and followed basi cortege of citizens through the celebrated than we did before it came to be talked of how gloriously it would be dono we felt quite elated over the result of the donations for the johnstown sufferers and see no reason why conr celebration furnish a twin feather to that one in our cap of successes alie committee on the celebration knowing tha liberality and loyalty of our city fathers appealed to that body for aid and after glorious country in this city salute by infantry company song most artistically rendered by miss fannae taylor and others A speech so brief it was really short but no less brief than good was made by george cunningham salute infantry company miss millie bromley then sang the star spangled banner meriting and getting compliments from all sides geo spratley uncle sam followed with some brilliant points humorously delivered well sung song by miss janie clarke instrumental masic by miss fannie taylor it was grand song america by jno peters i needs no comment people know of his ability in that line recitation delivered just right by misa ada tracey as also was miss bertha Chip mans song which followed music by silver band recitation supposed speech of james otis by E W robinson by request miss fannie taylor ren dered a second and equally good instrumental piece on the violin toasts were offered by bp halliday alios barratt W V jackson and joseph lapish beautiful piece was given by tho and benediction by the chaplain the afternoon was spent in racing games etc and at about 6 the people returned to their homes As soon as darkness came a emht procession paraded the streets and alie day was ended by a grand display of fireworks under alie supervision of jos elsmore and jos robinson the committee finding chev were somewhat financially reported the same to the city council who will j pay the indebtedness and all decorated wagon tops banners decorations etc will be turned ovar to the city for future celebrations one grand feature of the day was the long line of horses mounted by loyal young america male andri male under the supervision of alie celebration is pronounced the grandest in lie history of american fork alie manner in which we celebrated the return of our national birthday and thereby manifested in sincerity our fidelity to the constitutional lawa of our country our patriotism and love for liberty and truth was at daybreak the peaceable citizens of our town were aroused from their quiet slumbers by the firing of guns music by the martial band and the joyous hilarity of our youths at sunrise the national flag was hoisted to float in the mornings gentle breeze signaled by a grand salute of thirteen guns under tha direction of captains jedediah dark and L W openshaw and music from the martial band directed by capt jos T chatwin at a m the procession was arranged by wm K hudson and isaiah I 1 holladay esis in tho following order A beautifully decorated car containing the goddess of liberty and her associates martial band bishopric and invited guests relief society twelve young ladies followed by twelve young men representatives of general george washington and wife on horseback in costume by mr alma openshaw and mary louisa boyle string baud sunday school citizens of all creeds ranks etc after alie procession had marched through some of tho principal streets to the meeting aliouse and the people were comfortably seated the following pro gramme of exercises was observed singing by the choir directed by prof T B heelis Pra yerby the chaplain mr lars A johnson singing by the choir reading declaration of independence by 0 V malmberg esq music by martial band biographical sketches of george washington and lady washington by mr alma openshaw and miss M L boyle beautiful song by the goddess of liberty miss phebe smith eloquent oration by levi openshaw esq music by string band excellent patriotic speech byam B armstrong an interesting song by mr wm A hudson very timely and appropriate remarks by bishop eji openshaw new rational song and chorus by mr win bennett prayer by the chaplain by the martial band during the dismissal of the audience at 5 p m the children were called together to go forth in the dance which they stoked greatly to enjo out door sports commenced at 4 p m fire works in the evening and a dance for alie adults closed the days celebration the various parts of the days pro gramme were well carried out without a jar or anything to mar the enjoyment of the people W C the good people of salem were aroused from their slumbers early m the morning of alie fourth by the firing of artillery at music by the band the reading of the declaration of independence the oration by R J nuttall we are marching along by six young ladie sand speeches by D R taylor and evan taylor were exercises in alie schoolhouse highly appreciated by all the sports and games in the afternoon display of fireworks in the evening and dance at night together with the forenoon exercises made tho occasion one of the most enjoyable ever witnessed in salem J J davis david sabin sam T caiti Cu iti baij edmond and lizzie camp deserve much praise for their unceasing labors as committee 0 S SPANISH the celebration of the nations birth day was such a success as generally characterizes spanish fork in all its undertakings in this patriotic act every body seemed to eel that true devotion to country to liberty and to tho true prosperity of the country as emanates only from true loyal hearts the parade was witnessed by hundreds many coming from the neighboring having heard of the grand preparations it would be im young ladies on tastefully and appropriately dressed representing the colonies by their side young gentlemen representing the signers of the declaration of independence a goddess of liberty miss clara jones standing on a richly decorated pedestal beneath a canopy of striking brilliancy and enveloped in a web of white a car of beauties whose inmates would put to blush the nymphs of arcadia or the sylvan fairies at the foot of olympus washington and his wife martha dignified earnest and hopeful the city officers zealous for prohibition followed by a cohort of trades professions and industries all of which indicated labor love and loyalty in the rear of this brilliant display were several imported Perc herons and other high bred animals the exercises at the bowery consisted of reading the declaration of independence pen dence by john moore esq oration by jos arees speeches by the hons geo D snell wm creer and G W brimhall singing by the spanish fork choir and miss mary chambers and well selected music by the brass hand toasts and sentiments win B hughes esq was the able manager of this part of the program mp in the afternoon much sport was in bulged in by the young and old such as racing climbing a greasy pole catching a greased hog tor which handsome prizes were given by alie committee A dance was also given at this time for the little ones ju the evening a grand enchanted the apper deep with shooting balls of colored flame and sporting sparks while the dancing hall of creer bielson was need with youth and gaiety gayety tripping merrily the nimble foot to the strains of
