Show THE GLORIOUS FOURTH A public Mee tius held wednesday night AT WHICH STEPS WERE TAKEN FOR A celebration the names cf those elected As committee on arrangements the citizens meeting called by the mayor to take steps for a proper observance of the fourth of july in provo mas held as announced in the last issue of the ENQUIRER in the courthouse wednesday night the silver band appeared on the streets in the evening to remind the people of alie affair and paraded to the front of the courthouse where after playing several selections they repaired inside of the building hera a number of prominent citizens were assembled mayor dusenberry was called to the chair and mr george sutherland was elected as secretary attar the object of the meeting had been stated by the chair mr M M kellogg moved that an executive committee of fifteen gentlemen be appointed with power to appoint sub com to attend to the details of the celebration mr S R thurman objected to the number ha thought nine sufficient were this committee to do all the work and no committees subcommittees sub to be appointed then it would be all right but when there beje to be other committees he thought nine would be sufficient he would therefore move to amend the motion that the general committee of arrangements not exceed nine the amendment was put and carried and the following gentlemen sustained as the committee W H dusenberry chairman geo sutherland S R thurman M M kellogg A 0 smoot jr benj bach man jr W C stone S S jones and kev jeffreys the name of W H king was presented for the seventh on this committee but johnb milner objected as he considered were enough lawyers already on the committee when the ninth and last place was reached the names of judge dusenberry and G were placed in nomination while the chair was waiting for oilier nominations J B milner again got up and said he would like to see some christian minister on the committee there were several of them present that he did not know any any of their names but he would like to see one of them get there mr thurman wanted to know if all present were not christians the mayor finally named over some of the reverend gentlemen present and mr jeffreys succeeded in being appointed to bring up the rear of alie committee the silver band here played bound the flag mayor dusenberry asked if any present desired to give any instructions to the committee or to offer any suggestions here mr milner was given an other opportunity by calls being made for him to speak mr milner arose he had nothing to say thought alie men elected had sufficient good sense to go ahead without any suggestions and do their duty acceptable cep table to the people all he wanted to see was a good gramme pro and a good celebration mr S E thurman moved that the chair be instructed to request through the papers the hearty operation cooperation co of the people in assisting the committee to secure a proper and rousing celebration of the fourth the motion prevailed the mayor here broached the subject of a procession should we have one this year he had seen so many of them and they had always appeared to him to be so monotonous while if the day was as hot as it generally is they were very fatiguing the silence that followed this intimation was sufficient to show that no one with the chairs suggestion and the consequence is there will be the usual procession rev J H goodell wanted to see provo preserve her dignity and leadership in properly celebrating the fourth and hoped that the event would not be merely a local aal air but that it would be such as to draw the people in from the surrounding settlements to provo he wanted the celebration to be something worthy of the city something ahead ot anything else belore known he realized that there would have to be considerable sid erable money expended to make the affair successful and he was on hand with his proportion mr M M kellogg thought a resolution of thinks was due to the silver band for the willingness they had displayed in being in attendance and furnis liing the resolution of thanks was put and carried on motion of mr S E thurman the chair was instructed to extend a cordial invitation to everybody to join in a proper celebration of the fourth kev J H goodell moved that the meeting adjourn subject to the call of the chair carried the band here struck up hail columbia at the conclusion of which the meeting adjourned the general committee on arrangements remained after the public meeting adjourned and proceeded to transact the preliminary business chairman W H dusenberry and mr SK Thurman were appointed a committee to wait upon the stake presidency and solicit the use of the stake tabernacle for the celebration alie committee meeting then adjourned till saturday night at 8 when the work of appointing subcommittees sub committees will be attended to and all the minor details arranged |
