Show GENERAL A. W. CORLISS IS CALLED BY DEATH DENVER, Colo.. Sept. 4. Brig.-Gen. Augustus W. Codies, U. S. A., retired, died at his home in this city today. Ho was born in North Yarmouth, Me., 1 March 25, 1837. Entering tho arnvy as a volunteer in 1S61, Gen. Corliss mado a brilliant record rec-ord in the Civil war, various' other campaigns cam-paigns and the Spanish-American war. I Ho was shot in tho shoulder at El Oaney arid, in consequence, lost p;irt of liis spinal column. Gen. Corliss spent two years in Cieufuogos, Cuba, , during the reconstruction period, and afterward -vvas Governor of Hinan, in tho Philippines. He .was with the American troops which aided in put- I ting down the Boxer rebellion in China. ' He was retired in March, 1901, being then a Colonel, and three years later, by act of Congress, was mado Jlriga- i dier-Gcneral in recognition of his distinguished dis-tinguished services. ! Gen. Corliss's health had been fail-I fail-I ing for Hoveral months, but was not I I regarded as serious until 3'csterday. I Hright's disease is given as the cause of hia death. |
