| Show THE EAST DRAIN A mile of work costing the city five thousand dollars A visit to the east part of town on i wednesday afternoon revealed the fact that the work on the drain thero ia of more proportions than a person at first is disposed to think T E thurman and C H miller who have the contract are rushing the job and have all iab meu and teams employed thai can work conveniently they intend to do all they possibly can to the drain before irrigation season as then the work will necessarily have to bo suspended the entire length of the drain when finished will be thirty five hundred feet and will carry off the stagnant wa tyr from the east pond the bos nume through which the water will flow is made of red pine two inch plank and la thirty two inches wide and twelve inches deep it is thought however that it will have to be boado two feet deep as already the box is half full of water furnished by springs encountered in cx cavi and the drain is but one fourth done the box will be covered with white cedar posta split in two on which three feet of dirt will be placed the street will then be graded down to the drain no water will bu allowed to flow over the drain and care will be taken to keep that portion of the street aa dry as possible the drain is laid eix feet below the bottom of the old dittli and a fall is given to it of half an inch to the rod the excavation is sixteen feet at the top and four feet ou the bottom and mountains af gravel have been taken out which we understand any one is free to haul away the city will use what is left on the streets the work on tho drain commenced about eight weeks ago since which time from five to twelve teams have ben constantly employed with additional hands the drain comme acea between second and third streets on tha west aide of U street and will reach centre street by the first of next month when it is expected that the work will be suspended till the irrigation season Is oyer when work shall be resumed the drain will run east on centre street about four blacks place designed by the city s as the most feasible location to drain the east pond the drain completed will cost in the neighborhood of rather more than our city fathers expected but then outside of the vast amount of good the drain will accomplish with the constant flow of water and the fall it has at some future time city will be able to sell the water right to some manufactory or other enterprise for power purposes the wells in the neighborhood bt the drain for a distance of two blocks have all gone dry which shows the effect it is having the water running through tho flume is mostly all spring water the boxes being so constructed as to permit of the water entering it it is expected that steps will be taken to fence the street on which tho drain is located in several places as it would be dangerous to leave it exposed the way it is whilo work is suspended |
