Show A TOUGH QUARTETTE they pass through provo en route to arizona THE ROBBERS OF THE EXPRESS IN CANYON DIABLO the story of their deed aad of their capture wednesday mornings utah central train that reaches brovo depot at half past seven contained the tough quartette that robbed the eastbound atlantic pacific passenger train on alie night of the of last month in canyon diablo west of winslow arizona an account of which the published at the time the news ol 01 their passing through provo was circulated around town tuesday night and in consequence quite a number of people were at the depot eager to catch a glance of the desperadoes As the train stops here about twenty minutes this opportunity was successfully success tully and alio robbers were inspected by a number of people the story of the robbery is briefly told the train was moving slowly on taft night stated and the robbers mounted the locomotive without difficulty by threats of shooting they forcell the engineer to stop the train one of ake men stood guard over the locomotive while the others took the fireman to the express car and compelled him by threats to call to the wells fargo express messenger to boen the door which the robbers entered they searched the messenger and obtained from him between and A safe containing several thousand dollars was not touched and no demand was made on the messenger to unlock it none of alie passengers were molested and no resistance was offered in fact it would haye been useless and the robbers had a decided advantage after the robbery alie foai masked men started south As soon as possible sheriff buck ot yavapai county arizona called a posse and started m pursuit the robbers then took their flight northward into utah thinking to throw the officers off the scent the posse followed themi with diligence upon reaching in utah they found that they had been amusing themselves at the expense of the settlers who had by some means or other got news of the robbery and suspected the fellows of being the guilty parties about thirty men organized for the purpose of effecting capture but with no good result the fellows so terrorized the settlers that the latter finally gave up and they rode slowly away bidding their would be captors an affectionate goodby it was at cannonville Cann onville sheriff lokeil learned that they had headed for a canyon about forty miles east of that point they first got sight of the robbers en the morning of april ast 1st and both parties opened fire one 0 their horses were killed and they then dismounted and tools to the brush which is wild and thick and in many places quite impassable that day thet Sheriff captured bill steiner the leader of alie gang two days afterwards they got dark and quince and the next day john smith all of them were heavily armed but with pistols only to return with their prisoners over the road they had chiae would be no small undertaking and after consideration it was decided to press on to milford and then go to denver by way of salt lake and take the santa fe for prescott it is not known even by the officers just how much amonoy was stolen but the money found on the men together with what has been accounted for amounts to over 1000 on the way up one of the prisoners made a full confession fes sion so that there the doubt as to the right parties having bean captured the party left salt lake for denver wednesday afternoon and will arrive in prescott arizona nest ne st tuesday night |
