Show A MONUMENT OF llull nest monday is the day for the completion of the great eiffel tower in paris which at present is sao feet and weighs tons leaving tons more iron to bu used so long ago aa it was decided to erect in the champ do mare paris in connection with the approaching pro aching exposition the highest iron tower yet known the idea originated with M eiffel who estimated the cost to be one million dollars to this sum the french assembly in november voted one third of the estimated cost and the remainder of the money lias been supplied by the contractors who in return receive a concession of ibe tower for twenty years expecting to reimburse themselves handsomely with an admission fee of five francs abo exact hight of the tower when finished will be nearly one thousand feet or over three hundred feet higher than the neton monument which at present is the largest structure in the world to approach the summit of the tower there will be three distinct kinds of elevators two will go to the first platform two others to the second and third platforms in a vertical line the whole trip will take five minutes and alie elevators will be capable of taking up persons an hour the to affer is a wonderful exhibition of the mechanical ingenuity of the present ace it is constructed entirely of iron and the combined lightness and strength of this material allows the building to the great bight already readied the know eledge of the exact strength of iron makes it perfectly safe to build a structure to the hight intended for the strains to which such a structure will be subject can readily be calculated and strength given accordingly chero needed it is claimed that the structure will be useful for experimental purposes after it has served as an attraction to the paris exhibition being so high it is above the region of floating impurities and allows of the taking of observation without interference from these organisms As great an achievement as the Eiffel tower is wo do not think it a greater engineering feat than some of the great american truss bridges |
