Frank -Morgan, alias Hart, alias Lamb, bunko artist and ex-convict, who escaped from tho King connt3' jail at Seattle, Wash., in a wholesale break of prisoners thirteen j'ears ago, rode out of tho city safely coucealod in a piano box, and subsequently did timo in nearly near-ly overy city and county jail in tho West, including Salt Lako City, is lodged in the city jail here on his way back to Seattle. ITo will begin a soven-yoar soven-yoar sentence for grand larceny in the "Washington State prison at Walla Walla, Wal-la, which ho would have finished six years ago if ho had not joined in tho jail break. Strange to relate, Morgan was tho only one of the jail breakers who was not captured and returned to prison or killed within a short time after tho escape. Morgan, who was arrested at Alma, Kan., by Special Agent Rossitcr of the Rock Island road three weeks ago, charged with working trains, is in tho custody of W. F. Lanbschcr, captain of the Seattle polico, aud Bert C. Thompson, Thomp-son, deputy fihcrifi" of Kings county, who will leavo" over tho Oregon Short Line, for Seattle with their prisoner this morning. Bunkoed Two Sisters. Morgan is being returned to Seattle, after thirteen 3-ears of broken freedom, to expiate the crime of bunkoing two women, the Misses Amanda and Aminda Anvick, Swedes and sisters, out of $050 parly in 189-1. He, with two other crooks, going b' tho names of Louis Goodfriehd, alias Jones, and Michael Golden, alias "Sheeny" Mike, met tho women down on the w"ater front in Seat-tlo Seat-tlo one night, told a hard-luck story, exhibited ex-hibited a bill for freight which they claimed they wore unablo to "lift, also what purported to be a certificate of deposit for $650 in a Seattle bank. TIig unsuspecting women advanced the threo bunco artists $650 on tho bogus deposit cortifieale. Morgan was arrostod May 31, 1S94, and charged with grand larccnj'. IIo was tried, convicted and sentenced Juno 23, 1891, to servo seven years in tho Stato prison. His case was appealed to tho supromo court on tho technicality that tho offense alleged did not consti-tuto consti-tuto grand larceny, and whilo he was being held in tho Kings couutj' j'ail Keuding tho appeal tho wholesale jjail-roak, jjail-roak, one of tho most sensational in the West, occurred. Escapes in Piano Box. Morgan, or Hart, as he then gave his name, was shipped out of the city in a piano box by friends and successful!' cludod the authorities. Blank was shot and killed two da-s after the jail break and all tho other prisoners wcro recaptured recap-tured and returned to jail in a short time. None but Morgan mado good his escape. Descriptive circulars were sent broadcast over the county and Kings count' officers traveled soveral hundred miles in an attempt to recapture Morgan, Mor-gan, but all ell'orts to that end were futile. fu-tile. Morgan worked his waj' to Salt Lako Lake City and was arrested hero September Sep-tember 10, 1905, ton -ears later by Detectives De-tectives Raleigh and Shannon, with J. II. Williams, alias J. IJ. Keogh, for grafting, the third member of tho trio of crooks evading tho officers. Both Morgan arid Williams got "floaters." Over a mouth later, October 2S, tho third member of tho trio, Jess Cudahy, was caught and given thirty days for vagranc'. Identified by Photograph. Morgan disappeared from tho city for good upon his release upon a "float-or," "float-or," so far as known, working his way further East. His prisoner's face appeared familiar fa-miliar to him and ho left Morgan in tho Alma jail whilo he ran down to Kansas City and searched tho rogues' gallery thero. Tho Seattlo aud Kings count3' authorities wero notified noti-fied at onco and Captain fJaubschcr and Deputy Thompson went to Alma after Morgan. Morgan says ho is -19 years old and he looks that ago. By tho time ho serves his seven-ycar sentence ho will have reached his fifty-sixth milestone, but ho appears resigned to his fate. In his broken health seven years' imprisonment imprison-ment means practically a lifu sentence, but Morgan may emerge from jail built up in health and live several years afterward. |
