Show It Is Thought Two or Three May Result From Grand Jury's Investigations. ALL AVENUES OF NEWS ARE TIGHTLY CLOSED Federal Inquisitors Will on Monday Again Take Up 'the Work. The federal grand jury devoted half of Saturday to investigating tho alleged theft of $.106,250 from the vaults of tho Utah National bank on January -L Tho jury evidently is getting closer to the root of the matter than it has been for 6omo time. And it appears that in tho ratio in which tho jury is approaching approach-ing the end of its work, it is also bo-coining bo-coining more careful about letting information in-formation "leak out.''' There seems to be a feeling or conviction among those who have boon following the work of the jury closely, and who have been watching "the witnesses as they havo passed to aud fro from the jury room i that something will result within the I next week or ten day. It is expected that two or threo indictments will be returned when the jury has finished its work. During the last threo days it has been impossible to secure any information concerning witnesses who" havo been examined. ex-amined. "Witnesses say that they are warned while .before the grand .jury to not even answer questions put to them by reporters whom they "happen" to meet while leaving the jury room. And in case the reporter doesn't know everybody every-body in Salt Lake Citv and Ogden. and every bank official and expert in nearly every line, from locksmiths to handwriting hand-writing experts, it becomes rather a difficult dif-ficult task to state just who has been before the jury and who has not. And the jury docs not alwavs finish with tho witnesses tho same day they arc called. But few witnesses are being be-ing permanently dismissed. Some are called back the same afternoon they are dismissed. At least one witness has been hold in the ante-room for nearly a whole day going in and coming out as the jury chose to have other witnesses appear before it. Other witnesses have been called back a day or two after their first appearance. McComick Called Once. Of the bank officials, President. Mc-Cornicle Mc-Cornicle is the only one who has appeared ap-peared . beforo the jury .but once, anl who has not yet been called back. President McCorniek has not boon permanently per-manently dismissed, hcucc it is quite certain t hat he will ngnin meet tho iiry. Joseph Nelson, hi3 relatives and friends havo boon before tho jury at least one-fourth one-fourth of tho time. It 5s undoubtedly true that the. investigation of Mr. Nel-hoii's Nel-hoii's business affairs have formed a very important feature of the jury's study. Other features, judging of course entirely en-tirely by the witnesses who have appeared ap-peared bofore tho jurv, havo been the automobile trip to Ogden which Joseph Nelson and J. If. Garrett, are supposed to have made on January 5. But the automobile incident has not in all probability, prob-ability, been the only ono which the jury has investigated" in connection with the Ogden end of the case. It will be remembered that W. F, Adams received re-ceived a letter from Ogden which has not been explained. Many are of tho .opinion that tho letter was'simplv written writ-ten by Adams's enemies to cast discredit dis-credit upon him. No doubt the jury has settled or will settlo this question and will learn who wrote that note from Ogden Og-den and the writer's purpose in sending the note. Then, too, the question as to whether or not thero were any members of the Utah National banking staff in Ogdeu at the time the letter was writ- 1 ten, is a question that has never been discussed in tho papers to any extent, but one which tho grand jurv" is probably prob-ably settling or has already settled. j Persistent Rumors, Persistent rumors havo been circulated circu-lated that detectives aro now at work I on certain features of tho case. But as to who they arc and by whom fhey arc employed, no ono seems to bo aide to offer an explanation. It is well known that .the banking methods of the Utah National havo been studied with zeal by tho jurv, but. as to why certain members of the "ban Icing Ic-ing stall havo been examinod and dismissed, dis-missed, while others havo been examined exam-ined and simply held waiting, and still oth ers have boon examined and are continuing con-tinuing to be examined, is a matter which possibly offers some explanation as to tho source of tho valuable information in-formation which the jury is apparently receiving But tho jury is simply sawing wood. Tho sessions aro longer, and efforts are being made to keep the information within tho circle of the jury, tho district dis-trict attorney's office and the witnesses. Tho jury will continue its work Monday Mon-day afternoon at I o'clock. |
