Show CITY COUNCIL A franchise granad the street eail road company the city council met last night in special session mayor dusenberry occupied the chair the assessor presented a petit on that there was no plat of the city m his office and asking that one bo furnished the matter was referred to the committee on streets and allege A communication from the north american co offering to lay one of the sidewalks running an entire block with asphaltum without cost to the city was read and referred to the committee on streets and alleys being present presented tha petition protesting against the sale of the west half of the court honse block mr maiben here i rose and said that at the previous ions meeting hy had said he was informed there was a prominent citizen in the city who having signed this same petition without knowing its real purport had since signing it ordered his name to be erased from it mr maiben now wished to state that he had ascertained thera was no truth in the report the mayor then proceeded to read the names attached to the petition there were upwards of names to the document which represented a large proportion of theS taxpayers there were th names ol 01 au or au ladies among the signatures on motion of mr scott the petition was referred to the committee of the mr A D holdaway reported favola bly on the petition of the provo street railroad Eail road company and recommended that the accompanying resolution be adopted the resolution granting tha right of way through certain streets to the provo city railroad company was then up for consideration on the third reading mr scott moved to strike out the shore of utah lake and insert to A street mr farrer strongly opposed the provision granting the franchise to the shore of utah lake for the reason that at a certain point west seventh street at present was only two rods wi this grant would interfere with the rights of public travel the question was asked the city attorney whether any liability would attach to the city if they gave the right of way over ground they had no control over the answer was there would be none there was then considerable discussion as to the title of provo city to a four rod street at the lower end of davis land some of the bembera were in forever settling the dispute as to ownership owne iship by opening a four rod street clear through to the lake and take chances of a contest in the courts with those landowners who resisted the claims of the city the amendment of mr scott was lost other provisions in the resolution evoked warm discussion especially those fixing the license per each car finally 5 per car was charged for each year of the first three years 10 per year for the next five 15 per annum for the balance of the period of the graut and for each and every other car 1 per annum during the entire term of the grant the resolution was finally on motion of mr scott passed by its attla the council then adjourned |
