Show MAKES A BID for the erection of the university SEVERAL DONATIONS HANDED IN AT THE MEETING A subscription committee elected to work among the people A meeting of citizens was held in the courthouse last evening under the auspices of the chamber oi commerce to consider what propositions provo can offer the methodist conference committee for the establishment of its contemplated university here shortly after 7 mayor dusenberry called the meeting to order and stated the object of the gathering by invitation of the chair rev mr jeffreys of the methodist church in this city saoko in which he depicted the benefits would secure to provo in the event of the establishment of the university last summer a committee was appointed to select a location and take steps for its erection this committee was authorized to erect a structure at a cost of not less than the educational training taught therein to embrace law medicine science philosophy agriculture etc no place in thia intermountain region was better suited for the erection of such a building than provo there will be at least students which means the circulation every week of at least 2000 it was necessary that some kind of proposition be made this committee as will fa rant the erection of such n building this city the site will have to be not less than twenty acres while or acres of ground will have to be adjacent to induce families to locate in the io mediate vicinity so as abo building can receive sufficient endowment to partly austain it judge dusinberry Duson berry offered a resolution to the effect that the people of provo offer such inducements to the committee as arill warrant the construction of alie university in this city alie more that can be offered the more possibility there will be of succeeding though our chance may be but one out of five yet he did not believe in sitting supinely down and using no effort auf few thought the asylum would bo erected in provo but it is here in the early days it used to be Tex ashell or provo but this city has made rapid strides since then he believed that a liberal inducement should be offered and a committee appointed to solicit subscriptions to see what can he done tn the matter mr reed said alio securing of such a building would make provo the educational centre of the territory the university would bring a class of people liere as would make quits a beneficial change both socially and religiously it would bring a class of young men here who would rely on their brains instead of their money if a committee calls on him ho w donld biye and if that would not do he would double it he would like to see everybody even the boys do something to secure its mr A A noon aard the establishment of this university meant something great in many ways there were numbers of young men in provo who needed much more education than they can get here today to day thousands and thousands of dollars would be circulated as a result of the university being established in this city while other industries would spring up all around us as a result let offers of land bo made and every assistance si stance given towards the accomplishment of this areat desideratum dont let cold water be thrown on the move but let us show our willingness and earnestness bv donating liberally of our means mr amos D holdaway most heartily endorsed the sentiments of the resolutions and considered it the duty of the people of provo to strain every effort to secure the location of the university such a building would place within the reach of the boung men the opportunity of gaining an education that it is im possible for them to obtain in utah besides an influx of intelligent men and women there is nothing we can locate in this city which the speaker would more heartily support than this university on motion of rev mr jeffreys a committee of five was elected in addition to the chamber committee to solicit subscriptions script ions and receive proposals of land and otherwise act under the direction of the chamber of commerce for the accomplishment ment of the object the jo lowing named gentlemen were elected S S jones thomas beesley james F dunn A D holdaway ed pike the chamber committee corn arises W N dusenberry A A noon and Reed Smoot rev here arose and stated that he had to leave provo early in the morning and consequently would now like tho committee to put him down for this was followed by similar offers from mr bahnman and S 8 jones mr thomas beesley said he had five acres of land which he would give for its location or if the committee did not wish to accept the land he would give its equivalent in cash mr J D jones donated mr S S jones that the proceedings of this meeting be not published until after the committee meet in salt lake city as it might be policy to keep the inducements offered by provo people of salt lake and ogden several gentlemen offered suggestions and encouragement to the scheme when dr pike arose and asked the committee to put him down for after which an adjournment was taken the committees arranging to meet tonight to night in the same place to which everybody is invited |
