Show c THE convention A lively time with the delegates A FUSION TICKET ADVOCATED WITHOUT SUCCESS but two members of conn cil yesterday morning was a lively time for provo the delegates appointed at the primaries of the peoples party to meet in convention for the purpose of nominating municipal officers offic erb for election next monday were in and around the courthouse some time before the appointed hour for commencing business discussing the probabilities of the day at 10 nearly all the delegates were present in the courtroom and a large turnout of people were assembled to witness the proceedings it had been noised around eliat the advisability of agreeing upon a fusion ticket was going to be about and this fact added considerably to the interest of the occasion mr S S jones of the executive committee of the peoples barty of provo city called the assembly to order and stated that he was prepared to receive nominations for temporary chairman A eggertsen moved that P M wentz act as temporary chairman mr wentz arose and nominate dS S jones for alie position nominations were voted upon resulting in election J B keeler was elected temporary secretary G pickup moved that a committee on credentials numbering three be elected W E H moved to strike out elected and insert appointed the amendment carried and the chair appointed J E daniels J F dunn and C conrad the committee retired john A brown moved that J 0 graham bo called upon for a speech the motion carried and mr graham made a few remarks on the duties and responsibilities bili ties of delegates of the peoples party and expressed his confidence in the integrity 0 the gentlemen there assembled and in ability and purpose to make such selections as will give the party unbounded satisfaction at the close of mr grahams remarks S S jonea arose and referring to the action of the party in salt lake city on saturday last in connection with nomination for city officers moved that the secretary read the resolutions there and then adopted and published in the salt lake herald the motion prevailed and the secretary read the resolutions referred to the committee on credentials returned and reported as follows PROVO CITY feb to convention of the peoples party city we your committee on credentials after having examined the certificates of delegates respectfully report that we find the following named persons authorized to act as delegates in this convention held for the nominating of candidates to be placed on the peoples ticket first ward 8 S jones jas E daniels 0 edinburgh L S glazier 0 H burg W D alexander jas E daniels jr second ward A greenhalgh jas F dunn W IL H bixman Pix man A eggertsen canby scott george thatcher A G conover third ward edward E hording alternate A singleton acquilla adopted J A brown moved that the temporary organization be made permanent M wentz stated that he preferred some one alae take the position as permanent chairman he wished it understood however that if he ws elected to that position he would exercise his right to vote and otherwise act as other delegates in the convention browns motion was then put and carried the reading of the minutes of the meeting held two years ago was called for the call was responded to and the minutes were accepted the roll of delegates was then read all the delegates were found to be present A eggertson nominated 0 H berg as chaplain the nomination carried and the chaplain offered prayer S S jones moved that the convention vote for nominees by ballot J A brown opposed the motion and offered an amendment to the effect that the voting be vive race the amendment was lost and the original motion was put and carried J F dunn moved that the convention proceed to vote for the officers at large S S jones arose and again referring to the liberal example seaby leading city suggested the propriety of its adoption bv this convention one or two liberals seated among the spectators attempted to arouse a little enthusiasm over this recommendation but no attention was paid to it by members and the chair put dunns motion to the convention and it carried A greenhalgh then arose and put in nomination the name of james jamn for mayor J E daniels nominated namina ted hon W H dusenberry both nominations being seconded members proceeded to ballot J F dunn moved that abo chair appoint two judges of election moed that the number be three the amendment prevailed and the chair appointed jas P dunn W D alexander and W R H as the judges ballots were cast the count showing FOR dusenberry 19 dunn 9 berg moved that the nomination of dusenberry be made unanimous the motion was put there being only one dissenting voice heard the nominations for recorder Ee corder then followed A eggertson naming james hardy and J AJ Browh E L jones W J lewis aked whether hardy was a qualified voter or not eggertsen answered yes and spoke in advocacy cf his nomination berg thought that E L jones was the best penman of the two S S jones was not in favor of making too many changes count was taken the result being as follows jones c r T r 13 hardy 10 jones gras declared to be the nominee pickup nominated jas E daniels for treasurer berg moved for a suspension of the rules and that the voting be viva voce the nomination was carried unanimously berg nominated john W turner for city marshal and L S glazier nominated jas IS daniels jr S S jones said he understood that the gentleman gent lemaa nominated fD aniels because he thought the present incumbent bad served the people long enough and it was probable that turner would be willing to resign glazier stated that he had heard ner was willing to do so had so wished it that he might have a rest for awhile 5 f f ra j ar f s I 1 F t ays balloting was then proceeded with and stood as follows for turner 16 daniels 11 walter scott was then placed in nomination for assessor and collector by mr pasman L S glazier nominated T M samuelson and mr pickup nominated W H jerown the latter nomination was withdrawn on J A brown stating that W H brown would not accept jones thought that as alie scandinavian element was quite numerous they should have representation and support ed samuelson the vote stood for scott 13 samuelson 15 samuelson was formerly declared as nominee S S jones then offered the following resolution that we take steps toward following the liberal example of the peoples party of salt lake city in arranging for a representation in the city council of said city of minority representation by leaving vacant in our ticket the place for one councilor to be nominated by the liberal party of this city and that a committee of three be appointed from this delegation to wait upon the committee of said liberal party and inform them of our action berg thought thi action was premature perhaps the liberal party might regard the offer to give them one councilor as an insult pickup dilliot favor the proposition jones made another speech in sup port of his resolution J F dunn liked the idea and would support it but A G conover thought it would only be proper for ahe gentleman who offered the resolution to provide also that alie vacancy for a liberal nominee be made from the first ward he could not however favor the proposition in its present shape and at this time the resolution was put to a vote those supporting it being S S jones L S glazier A eggertsen camby scott J F dunn A greenhalgh and J A brown it was of course lost it was decided to nominate aldermen and councillors councilors counci lors in the following order second ward third ward fourth ward and first ward walter scott S P eggertson jr and james dunn were nominated respectively ively for alderman from the second ward following is the vote for scott 6 dunn 8 eggertsen 14 8 S jones made a few remarks eulo gazing james dunn and his services in the past on motion the delegates then balloted on the two having the highest number re as follows for eggertson 15 dunn 12 scott i J E daniels jr thought there had been a mistake he supposed when he doted that it was tor andrew eggertsen G 0 haws and D snow stated that they also had been voting under that impression jones moved that they reconsider the vote in answer to mr pickup the chairman stated that the record showed that S P eggertsen jr and james dunn were the nominees junes motion carried and the next balloting showed 13 for eggertsen and 15 for dunn the latter was declared elected for alderman from the third ward J AJ nominated BW jr J E talmage was also nominated the result was 22 talmage 6 and driggs was declared elected 3 E snow nominated A D hoi daway for alderman from ahe fourth ward berg nominated J E booth the ballot stood holdaway 17 booth 11 holdaway was declared to be the nominee W D alexander and C D glazier were respectively nominated for alderman from the first ward with the following result alexander 17 glazier 11 jorgen hansen was nominated by thatcher for councilor from the second ward walter scott by J F dunn A eggertson by 0 conrad and J F dunn by J A brown A recess was then taken until 2 on motion of mr jones at 2 the delegates reassembled and consideration of the nominations for councilor from the second ward the ballot for hansen 15 scott 51 t JF Dunn 6 A eggertsen 2 J A johnson nominated J E talmage for councilor from alie third warda eul was suspended and talmage elect ed by acclamation conrad nominated J E snow for councilor from the third ward sao v declined and the nomination was withdrawn james A bean was then nominated by G 0 haws and elected by acclamation roger farrer was nominated and elected by acclamation for councilor from the first ward mr pickup remarked at this stage that it had been ascertained that the liberals were willing to vote the peoples ticket provided they were given two councillors councilors counci lors instead of one as proposed by mr jones W E H Pa suaan A G conover Cono vcr walter scott and A eggertsen were each place d in nomination for second councilor from the second ward con eggertsen declined following is the ballot For 12 scott 16 S liddiard J A johnson and J W hoover jr were then nominated for second councilor from the third ward john A browns name also being called that gentleman arose and mated that although willing to serve the people when they really wished hun to do so ho want to be put up simply for amusement balloting then proceeded with and resulted as follows liddiard 9 johnson 1 hoover brown 14 the second ballot resulted with 9 for liddiard and 18 for brown at this point a communication was read from walter scott asking the convention to reconsider Us action in nominating him as he earnestly declined for reason best known to hemsell pickup moved that tho vote on abo nomination of mr scott be reconsidered the motion being adopted berg nominated andrew eggertsen pickup nominated A G conover Cono vcr greenhalgh nominated W E H and thatcher nominated evan conover and
