households in reading tu day the pall of death hangs over the city fathers mothers brothers sisters relatives and friends are grief stricken over the wreck of last night over one hundred spirita are hushed forever in death as the result of the wreck and ruin wrought in this city by the storm the cyclone left tho entire city in darkness relieved subsequently by the electric lights and huge bonfires which shed a lurid glare on the scene of death all night long brave and willing lianda assisted in the work of rescue the disaster is fully as bad as reported last night the list of fatal cases will reach full one hundred may be more the hospitals and undertakers establishments are filled with victims the physicians are all busy many private houses have been opened for the accommodation mo dation of the injured this morning everything is directly in contrast with the fury of last night all is again bright and glorious in the hearons as though mocking alie work of last night the polish church disaster of several months ago was one of abo most horrible accidents that has started this community but the loss of life by that fearful cave in sinks into insignificance when placed on a parallel with tho awful visitation of last evening the only eyo witness to tho disaster as far as known was mrs GimBi ill residing near the mill about twenty minutes of G said she to an associated press reporter 1 I heard an awful thinking it was the new hauae being put up alongside of us I 1 ran to the front door A great cloud of dust hung over tho silk mill and I 1 could hear the crashing of timber and the roar of falling walls fhe next moment I 1 saw the mill a great of ruins from the midst of which came such awful moaning and groaning and terrible cries as I 1 never want to hear again not a soul did I 1 see come out of the mill and it seemed many minutes to me before anybody came to the spot teams of every description omnibus es funeral coaches fire wagons hospital vans and private vehicles were preg fawl into service and were running rapidly to and fro from the scene of the disaster all night bearing the of the wounded dying aud dead to their homes and hospitals from taie statements of some of those alio escaped from the building it appears to have gone in an instant there was a loud crasci of breaking timber and the persons in the mill all rushed toward the main doors A good many succeeded in getting out four girls saved themselves by jumping from the second story windows the first rumbling noise followed tha falling of the building the upper story going first with its human load had it not been for the fact that but few of the hands were on the third and fourth floors at the time scarcely a life would have been caved george grimshaw one of the proprietors of the mill who barely escaped with his life having received several severe wounds stated that there were about person principally girls and boys in the establishment at the timo f the occurrence up to 8 this morning a large majority of victims were still in the ruins grimshaw gives the list of the killed injured and missing reported to him the list accounts for about killed the work of hunting for the dead continued all of today to day and the scenes surrounding the mill were but a repetition of what ensued during the whole of last night there were fathers and mothers waiting aud beseeching the rescuers to give them some tidings of their missing sons and daughters it has been determined to push the work of rescue all of to night the list of deaths a sent to the associated press tonight to night is believed to be the first thoroughly correct one yet published it is as largo as was at first feared but still there are over thirty dead and a number are still missing and there is but one belief and that is that probably a dosen r moro of the missing are still beneath the debris tho coroner has summoned a jury and tomorrow to morrow will begin the inquest on the bodies of the five men roasted to death in the reading shop they will hold nu inquest on the silk mill until satisfied all arc taken out very little business was done here today to day the city giving way entirely io the excitement attending the terrible disaster mr grimshaw the lessee of the mill estimated the dead at thirty five to forty A number are so seriously injured that abey will die
