Show KANSAS CITY A correspondent writes up her features of interest editor of the I 1 reached kansas one week ago today to day aid soon found a cordial welcome from relatives with whom I 1 am sojourning sojo this place assumes quite an important position amon the commercial centers of the west it contains about one hundred and twenty five thousand people and is rapidly improving in point of population ula tion wealth and internal improvements the city has now about sixty miles of cable railway lines and bome forty miles more are already chartered to b e built the coming summer it is halu that the longest cable in the world is in kansas city it baini something over six miles in gleasm riding in cable cars is not very expensive tor one can ride nearly six miles for s anckle although to ride only a single block is all tho same there are many packing houses located at this place which represent a large amount of capi give employment to a largo number of the number of employed emp loyes being about three thousand some three thousand cattle and five or six thousand hoga are slaughtered daily during tho packing season the bank clearings approximate about ten millions a week while the building permits daring the summer season averaged aver aeed about tareo hundred thousand weekly during the year just past thero has been over twenty fiyo miles of paving constructed mostly cedar block pavement bome asphaltum during the latter part of tho season j although kansas city was originally on very uneven ground the enterprising citizens have made many rough places smooth and large brick bleeks now occupy the places where a few years ago was a rocky ravine or a high and precipitous cip itous embankment the railroad facilities of kansas city are only second to choso of chicago it now being the terminal point of over twenty five different and distinct lines the weather since my arrival has been very mild there having been no ice formed as yot in consequence of which the ice men of the city are said to be looking exceedingly about concluded to go north for their next seasons supply last thursday in company with another of the numerous davis family I 1 took a trip to alie town of independence going and coming on the punning line a distance of twelve miles each way for tho vory reasonable sum of twenty five cents I 1 found it quite a place gaith many fine residences and surrounded bv a beautiful and well cultivated country I 1 shall continue my journey eastward tomorrow to morrow and will remain some time in caldwell county visiting relatives and attending to matters of a personal nature will endeavor to stumble on some of interest to write about at some future time DAVIS KANSAS CITY mo jan 7 |
