Show PROCURES EVIDENCE AGAINST GAMBLING Weber County Attorney Finds Victim Who Will Tell of Losing Money. Special to The Tribune. OGDEN. May 25. U appeared for a while that the good promises which County Coun-ty Attorney Nathan Harris made to tho citizens of Ogden to prosecute any person maintaining a gambling house, If evidence was furnished JiJm, would come to naught, for the" reason' that no one could be found to glvo him the desired Information. But In tho last two weelcs witnesses have complained that they have evidence upon which tho . County Attorney can work, and prosecutions will doubtless follow as soon as. the complaints can be drawn and warrants served. From an appeal for assistance from the county made to the County Commissioners Commission-ers Monday morning by Frank McDou-gall, McDou-gall, it has developed that McDougall. according ac-cording to his story, has been rendered destitute by one of the gambling places which the County Attorney has been anxious to secure evidence against. McDougall Mc-Dougall says that several weeks ago -he took a room at tho Annex rooming Iioubo. Being persuaded, ho entered the gambling rooms said to be conducted by Craigbaum & Peterson, access 'to "which can be gained by a door from the rooming house. Here, ho says, he dropped a roll amounting to $2S6. Shortly afterward he took suddenly sick and, orWhe advice of County Physl-clan-Gordon, he was sent to the ho'spital. where he admitted that he had Hwallowed the contents of a phial of laudanum for the purpose of self-destruction. When his condition improved ho told his story to Joseph Stanford, commissioner of the poor, who advised him to seek assistance from the county. McDougall declared Mdnday tbit one of the proprietors of the place where ho had lost his money had made him an offer of 20 to drop the case, but It is probable that the County Attorney will not allow a settlement of tho matter outside of the criminal courts. Another case of gambling was reported to the County Attorney several days ago by a man who claimed he hadywon money in a gambling place, but was-1 afterward made to disgorgo his wad at the point of a pistol in the hands of one of tho men running the house. |
