Show GOARDSIIEH WILL MEET OS lEWJTABMT RANGE State Shoot With Xew Springfield Spring-field Eifles to Begin Sunday. Sunday morning the bills around Bonneville will echo with the shots from the new United States army Springfield rifle, the occasion being the opening of the National Guard of Utah's new target range, which Is located about one mile north of Beck's Hot Springs, and to the east of the Salt Lake & Ogden Railroad company's tracks. It is well off the main road and the shooting wlll bo to the east. Red flags will be placed all around tho firing zone, lo warn persons who may attempt at-tempt to pass In front of the targets. Tho range, while it Is not entirely completed, will be ready Sunday morning, when two targets will be placed in position. posi-tion. Major "Williams is anxious that the Salt Lake companies get on the range at tho earliest possible moment, for they are now a month or so behind tho companies com-panies in tho outside towns. The new range Is far superior to that at Fort Douglas In many respects. The country is completely covered with green grass, and an excellent spring Is close at hand, to furnish the boys with water. The range, however, Is not large enough to take in the full 1000-yard course, the longest range being GOO yards. All men who qualify at fiOO. yards will finish fin-ish their course on the Government range at Fort Douglas. To shoot behind the GOO-yard mark It Is necessary to qualify as a sharpshooter, so that the number of men to use the Fort Douglas range will bo small. As none of the guardsmen have ever fired the new rifle It Is not expected that any high scores will be made Sunday. The new Springfield shoots a little to the right, while the old Krag rifle fired to tho left, and for this reason It will take some time before the men become thoroughly thor-oughly familiar with tho workings of the new gun. Arrangements have been made by the commanding officers of the guard with the management of the Salt Lako & Ogden Og-den railway to cany the guardsmen to the range, and trains will stop at a point within 200 yards of the range. |
