Show THE INEVITABLE HESUIiT. Tho selection of Smoot to succeed himself in the Senato has never been at any timo iu tho least doubt. Tho only thing that, caused some of tho legislators to gag at. it was the humiliating humili-ating nttitude which Smoot forced tho legislators to take. Tie compelled them to crawl to him in place of being himself him-self an applicant to them, lie would not say to them that lie was a candidate candi-date and desired their votes, but ho compelled them to sue to him, humbly asking him to accept tho Senatorship Of course, tho legislators had to cringe to the ecclesiastical arrognnco. They had no liberty of choice whatever. what-ever. Tho talk of any other candidacy was absolutely vain and futile. Tho legislators understood fully that President Presi-dent Joseph F. Smith had given Smoot ecclesiastical leave to run for this civil oflice, was supporting him to the fullest full-est oxtenfc in his ambition for it. and that that implied his "counsel," being, be-ing, in fact, his command, to the legis lators, to vote for Smoot. And accordingly accord-ingly they did so. For, whilo it is established from President Smith's testimony tes-timony that he oboys tho will of Almighty Al-mighty God or not as ho chooses to do, the Mormon legislator who would refuse re-fuse to obey the command of President Joseph F. Smith has not yet boeu elected, elect-ed, and is not likely to bo from any Mormon constituency in the State of Utah. Aud thoso obedient servants weio in tho majority; they had it all their own way. |
