Show Golden Eagle Csplurecl !n Boimliful Iir.LKN POHLMAN Golden eagles have rarely if ever been seen around J Bountiful, according to My-1 ron Knighton, 1283 E. 3rd Eout'1, who captured one with the aid of a blanket on a recent Saturday afternoon. The huge bird had been en-fayed en-fayed in a to-thc-deatl'. stug-gle stug-gle with another older golden eagle probably in a dispute over the older bird's territory. terri-tory. Usually found only on high mountain peaks, eagles ordinarily ordi-narily avoid civilization. Both males, the combatants had evidently begun fighting high in the mountains. Engrossed in killing each other, they had allowed their battle to csrry them over Bountiful where, at 5th South and 4th East, they crashed to the ground. The battle high in the air which had attracted quite a crowd, now continued on the ground. The younger bird was obviously getting the worst of it and judging, from the fierceness of the older eagle's attacks, would be killed within minutes. Mr. Knighton, who happened to be at the scene of the struggle even though empty handed, lushed to separate them. Nor m-illy afraid of " man, the bird.4 were too intent on claw ing each other to pay him any attention. Another bystander by-stander came forward with a blanket just as the eagles smashed into a fence, stunning stun-ning them, At fust, the men tried to capture both birds but be- cause of their size, settled on I the younger one. Not fully grown, this eagle had n wing f-pread of 6'i feet. Though severly wounded, he strug-I strug-I gled fiercely against the I blanket for 15 minutes. Mr. j Knighton was at first doubtful doubt-ful whether he could hold the bird until the curator of Ilogle Zoo, who'd been notified noti-fied of the eagle's capture and was coming out for hiin, could arrive. For a time after the capture, cap-ture, the other eagle hovered over-head as if waiting a chance to finish off his adversary. ad-versary. When several men came up to assist Mr. Knighton, Knight-on, however, the older eagle gave up. Evidently he returned return-ed to that high mountain peak he'd been defending so vigorously. The captured eagle, though battered and bloody, has recovered re-covered and is now a magni-ficant magni-ficant addition, to the Hogle Zoological gardens in Salt Lake City. |
