Tho question debated was: "Resolved, That tho President's power bo limited by tho appointment of a ministry directly answerablo to tho National Congress," This practically amounted to a direct comparison of the American and English Eng-lish Cabinets. Tho sophomores, speaking speak-ing for tho negative and defending tho American method of making and enforcing enforc-ing legislation, wero given the five votes of the judges. .1. M. Carlson, speaking for the negative, nega-tive, carried off first honors as tho best speaker of tho da-. His .speech was i well rendcrod, oratorical and ofl'cctive. I Ho closed with a strong appeal to tho American spirit of the nssernblv. E. A. Morgan, tho leader for 'tho affirmative, af-firmative, mado a strong speech in favor of tho British system, arguing thai; the system would give responsibility lo the Cabinet, and mako legislation more directly di-rectly from tho people. The judges of the debate were Richard Rich-ard W. "Voting, Stephen L. Richards, Professors George M. Marshall, Milton Bonnion and J. L, Gibson. . Tho silver trophy is a handsomo three-handled silver cup. The cash prize wns secured through the oftorts ot Prof. B3T0U Cummings. Interest in tho debate throughout tho school was widespread. Especially between be-tween the two contesting classes tho spirit was distinctly noticeable. One of tho juniors, of Irish origin, placed a piece of green buntng, the junior class color, on the silver trophy and immediately immedi-ately there was a rush for tho stand, .but through the action of the cooler students a contest between the two classes in other lines than debating, was averted. This is tho first year that intcrclass debating has been held at the school. The interest which it has created promises prom-ises to make it a permanent part of tho school work. |
