Show Group Tackles Area Recreation Needs This is the intent of a committee that mot for the first lime Wednesday veiling. Meeting was held in the Bountiful city hall, with representatives fromi most civic and religious groups present. Dr. Roger Erown, chairman of the recreation committee for the Bountiful council, called the meeting. In its first action the group decided all the south Davis area should be included in a general and overall recreation plan, including the financing. We can have anything we want in this area, Dr. Brown said, as long as there are vnough who want it. "I don't believe in giveaways, give-aways, where the city pays ind gives to the residents," he said. "I believe recreation can be worked out on a community level and be made self-sustain- ng." The need is for all to work together, he pointed out. As a group we can do much more than we can individually. Recreation can be organized organiz-ed much as the adult education educa-tion program was, the Doctor said. Let people indicate what they want. If enough want it, arrange it. Young people are not the only ones interested in recreation. recrea-tion. It is for all ages and all times of the year year round for all, he said. Mayor Harold L. Pope explained ex-plained why the city council feels the city hall should be built now and without bonding. bond-ing. , Bountiful is growing fast: Areas suitable for parks and recreation are fast being put into subdivisions, he said. If land is rot purchased soon, it will be too late, With this in mind the council coun-cil felt the city hall should be built without bonding, from money available and funds that will b available. Th'is would leave bonding ability free for other things, the mayor said. Bonding would be necessary to buy land, since the mill levy would not bring sufficient money, he added. Probably a citizens committee commit-tee should be set up to investigate investi-gate various locations, giving recommendations to the council, coun-cil, he said. This should not be left entirely to the council. Options could be obtained now, with purchase at a later date. The people should help with their suggestions and recommendations, rec-ommendations, he said. Now is the time. It's hard to put in a ball park after home are built, he concluded. A first project was discussed by the group. Dr. Brown said a pops concert could be arranged ar-ranged for sometime in March for about $600. After March it would cost about $300 more. This might be a good way to initiate interest for a more complete cultural program next year, he said. And such programs may well help encourage en-courage organization of orchestras, or-chestras, bands and choruses, he added. However, several of the approximately ap-proximately 50 persons present, pres-ent, said other programs of this nature have , been arranged arrang-ed for the next several months. Dr. Brown said this would not necessarily be a disadvantage or interference, since there are enough persons in south Davis County to fill more than one hall for one program. Most of the latter part of the meeting was given to brain See RECREATION on page fi P ' V.V-tr,rr.S-,v ,fr,f , T : r " . . srx -- a?:.. . s --. . 4v,f JJty-w.
