Show PROMPTLY GETS WRONG. Representative Howeii of t tah has taken an earl y opportunity to range himself on the wrong Ride of the Philippine tariff bill, the dispatches reporting re-porting him thus I am opposed to it I believe It Will do seririus injure to the beet sugar lndustrv In my State a very Important and Btl ld-Uy ld-Uy growing Industry The agitation has already had ji verv depressing effect r,n sugar storks In the State and fear of adverse ad-verse Isglsls tlon, as I shall term this Philippine bill, hiiti already made tho outlook out-look for the future rather gloomy There Is no reason whatever to he-lleve he-lleve that the passage of this bill, or of a.ny bill to reduce or even abolish entirely, en-tirely, tho tariff on sugar from the Philippines would In the least Injure the beet sugar Industry In Utah. When the proposed cut In the tariff upon Cuban Cu-ban sugar first came before the public, we opposed it on the ground that it probably would affect unfavorably the beet siiR.-ir Industry of this Slate. Hut when ihe sugar trust got Its grip upon t hl:-i local beet-sngnr Industry, Mr. T. H, Cutler assured us that th' CUt would not In the least affect the heet-sugar heet-sugar Industry of l'tah. He was entirely en-tirely right, as subsequent events have proved, sugar is higher here now and has been ever since, than It was before the passage of the lull reducing the tariff on Cuban sugar The truth Is thnt It is not at all a question -.f hurting the bet t BUgar Industry In-dustry of Utah; it is wholly s question Of trust conlrol The Mormon church authorities are In commercial alliance on this sugar question with the great sugar trust of th.- East; and as that trust doesn't want competition from the west coast, such as might imno with the duty largely redUl ed or possibly possi-bly taken off, from Philippine sugar, and as Representative Howell represents repre-sents ;he church authorities exclusively, exclusive-ly, he is of course opposed to reducing the duty on Philiplpne sugar. But not because it will be hurtful to the beet-sugar beet-sugar Interests of this State, for such reduction could not In the slightest degree de-gree affect those interests. Utah Is In the "sphere of influence" of tho Eastern East-ern sugar tTiist, and nothing from the west could reach us, save on terms Imposed Im-posed by the trust. But Representative Howell attributes the decline in the Utah beet-sugar stocks to the agitation for a reduced tariff rate on Philippine sugar. If any one had ever charged that Representative Representa-tive Howell was guilty of perpetrating a Joke, this statement would be evidence evi-dence of the truth of the charge Ho knows lhat there is not the slightest, reason in the world for any such a plea. The decline In sugar stocks here must be attributed to the monstrous overcapitalization over-capitalization of the companies, and to the diminished yield of beets the past season from the ravages of the white fly. This pest causes grave concern, no effective way of fighting It has been found and a good mat y of the farmers are getting discouraged. Another reason rea-son for their discouragement Is found in the refusal of the sugar companies to allow them to participate In the benefits of the advanced price of sugar; their contracts call for the delivery de-livery of beets at a given standard of saccharine strength, at the same old rate that prevailed before there was any rise In the price of BUgar. This rise has been from twenty-five to forty for-ty per cent. The companies have fattened fat-tened on it, and have watered their stock more than abundantly. In order to keep down the apparent rate of dividends. divi-dends. But the discouraged farmers gel none of the advance or profits. It is these things that have caused the depreciation of Utah sugar stocks. If Representath e Howell doesn't know-It. know-It. he should post hlmst lr if he does know It, he is guilty of deception and false pretenses in his letter giving his reasons for opposing the reduction of the duty on sugar from the Philippines |
