Show RAIN SWEEPS VESUVIUS Terrible Storm Carries Death and Destruction De-struction to Neapolitan Peasants. NAPLES, May 19. Tho Vesuvius ro-glon ro-glon was again Inundated today by a torrential tor-rential rain, which fell so heavily that a mighty river is now coursing down tho side of the volcano, carrying everything bofore It, and sweeping trees, lava, houses and animals out of Its path. Tho population popu-lation is In a state of panic. Tho torrent, which la composed In part of mud, cinders and ashes.la about twelve feet wide, and in some places as much as eighteen feet deop. Two Deaths Becorded. Two deaths havo already been recorded, a man and a boy having been drowntfd. The boy was 11 years od and the child of a peasant. Ho had been warned to ily from tho danger, but Insisted upon rushing rush-ing In tho direction of tho stream In an effort to reach his father, who was in tho torrent's path and unconscious of his danger. Tho boy succeeded In reaching his father, and both ran toward safety. Caught by Stream. Thov wore, however, overtaken by tho stream and swept downward. Another peasant Jumped In the wator to tho rescue, res-cue, but was also carried away. A second sec-ond man rushed to glvo help and succeeded suc-ceeded In pulling the lad's father and tho other from tho wator. but the man wns so Injured that ho died soon after.
