Show ATTACKS THE SURVEY Methods of Geological Department Denounced in House. WASHINGTON, June 13.-Dcnunclatlon of tho methods pursued by the United States Geological survey with a view of securing larger appropriations for the bureau bu-reau was heard today in the House. A point of order was made against tho item of SS-HOO'J for topographical surveys. After considerable discussion the chair overruled It, and then Mr. Small of North Carolina offered an amendment Increasing In-creasing tho appropriation to $350,000. This precipitated a discussion on the whole subject of tho Geological survey, led by Ir. Tawney of Minnesota. Mr. Tawney said that tho United States Geological survey Is tho most ambitious branch of tho public service and that slnco the nccosulon of the present director, di-rector, C. D. Wolcott, tho appropriation has Increased 300 per cent. Then pnaslng to tho complaint ho had to moko against tho methods adopted by tho bureau, ho read a telegram from Chester M. Dawes, general solicitor of tho Chicago, Burlington Burling-ton & Qulncy railroad, ln which Mr. Dawes said: "I am advised that It Is roported to cut down tho appropriation for gauging streams and Investigating water supply tinder tho reclamation act from $2CO,000 to $100,000. Such a reduction would greatly great-ly hamper tho development of the West ln this direction and cut off work where It Is proceeding rapidly and advantageously. advantage-ously. Hono you will consider It consistent consist-ent with tho public Interest to use your lnl!ucnce to see that tho appropriation Is maintained at $200,000." To this telogram Mr. Tawney replied: "Pleaso advlso mo ln what respect will tho development of tho West be hampered by the failure to gauge streams In Now England, the South and the other States east of tho MIsslsslpDl river.
