Today belongs to the membora of "Tho Old Guard" in Utah; to the veterans of tho War of the Rebellion. Numerically thoy aro decreasing perceptibly every year, but the loyalty they represent, and tho victories they won nearly a half century cen-tury ago never fall to call forth onthusl-nstlc onthusl-nstlc applause whenever they irprpcar as a body before the public. They have been given the preferred position In public parades pa-rades since tho surrender of the enemy at Appomattox, but thefr ability to parade pa-rade is about exhausted. Their age makes them more revered nnd today while tho machinery of their organization Is being adjusted for another year, what they stand for and what they have dono will cause them to be especially admired and praised. Flags Float Compliments. Every flag that floats will be to them a compliment. Every cheer that Is given, every hat that Is raised and every Handkerchief Hand-kerchief that is waved will revive to them the memories of the honors accorded them when, as young men, they marched home nnd reported tho accomplishment of a united country. The days of parades for them has passed, but thoy arc entitled to the same degree of praise as thoy feebly march to another and final home. Tanner Will 3o Present. For tho first time In the history 6T tho Grand Army of the Republic In Utah, as tho veterans hold their annual encampment en-campment today, thero will be present tho commander-in-chief of the National organization. Corporal James Tanner Is a worthy head for such a worthy order Ho responded re-sponded to tho call of arms In his youth and returned nfter the lighting- was over with only a part of his physical self. Ho has since licit! positions of honor and trust with credit to himself nnd honor to . his comrades. It is gratifying that he will be tendered a welcome and a reception re-ception befitting the position ho occupies. occu-pies. Five Posts in Utah. In Utnh thero are five Grand Army posts, tho James B. McICean and the George R. Maxwell posts of Salt Lake, the DIx-Logan post of Ogdon, the W. T Sherman post of Provo, and tho W. S. Hancock post of Park City. In these posts thero aro approximately 250 mom-bers, mom-bers, while in the State there are probably prob-ably 1000 members of tho order who ro-tnln ro-tnln their membership in other States. Then there are a liberal number of veterans vet-erans who have never Joined the G. A. K.. but they aro all veterans allko and the honor belongs to them all with equal fitness. fit-ness. , Women Assist Greatly. The working capacity of this membership member-ship Is strengthened oy somo 205 members mem-bers of the Women's Relief corps and the Ladies' Circle of the G. A. R. All the posts mentioned havo Relief corps except ex-cept the posts at Provo nnd Park City. Tho population of tho city will be temporarily tem-porarily nnd perceptibly Increased bv the old soldiers, the ladles and their friends, who will bo hero today. Will Meet Commander. Comamnder-In-Chlef Tanner nnd Mrs. Tanner will arrive hore at an early hour this morning. Thoy will be met at the depot by Attorney-General IU. A. Bree-don Bree-don and Comrade R. G Sleater, who will escort them to tho Kcnyon hotel Tho first session of tho encampment of the Department of Utah will convene at tho Odd Follows building at 10:30. The second session will be called at 2-00 o'clock. Reception Is to Be Held. Many of the comrades will meet Commander Com-mander and Mrs. Tanner at tho hotel at 10 o'clock. Whllo the first session Is be-Vng be-Vng held, which is of a preliminary nature for the real work of the afternoon, the distinguished visitors will bo given an automobile ride about the citv. For this purposo touring cars have been placed at their disposal by Jacob Jorltz, Thomas Homer and Georgo T. Odeil. Seeing Salt Lake Cars. In the first car will be Commander Tanner. M. A. Brceden, Rudolph Alff M M. Kalghn and F. H Clark. Tho second sec-ond car will contain Mrs. Tanner Mrs Agnes Pease, Mrs. H. P. Burns and Mrs". M. J. Hoge, representing the local relief societies and the Ladles of the G A R The third car will carry other committee members. Later in the afternoon tho ladles and their guests will view the town from sight-seeing cars, and at 5 o'clock thev will bo given an organ recital at the Tabernacle. Banquet This Evening.
