Show A CHLOROFORM DELAY. The wild haste of the Smootltes to bring his case to a conclusion la shown In the request of his attorneys for the fixing of March 26 as the date on which his witnesses shall appear. It will bo recalled that the Desorct News indicnted that Senator Smoot was moro Impatient than unyono else to have his mutter brought" to a conclusion. The present delay Is evidence of the usual News falsehood. Senator .Smoot could have any man In Utah, who Is willing to appear In his behalf at all, In Washington within five days. All that Is requisite is for him to notify Joseph F. Smith of the names of his witnesses, and President Smith could deliver them on a mission to the capital of the country. They would appear there prepared to Give the testimony desired. And this Is as true of some Gentiles as It Is of nearly all Mormons. Apostle Smoot does not desire to expedite his case. Every duy of delay Is a day gained. Every hour of postponement furnishes a possibility possi-bility or some great National event which shall obscure his affair. He Is now playing for himself the game which ho and certain aids and Influences In-fluences which he was able to command, have played upon the committee com-mittee and the country for two years past. However, his tactics will be unavailing. The Nation is determined upon action In this matter. Tho committee Is not llkoly to encourage nor even to brook any further dilatory proceedings after March 26, and when this case Is argued upon the floor the Senate and the country . will be prepared for a decision. The surest Indication of what that decision will be Is found In the fear of Apostle Smoot to have the Issue decided. His opponents may have some doubt, but he has none. He Is convinced that he will be excluded, ex-cluded, otherwise he would ask for the argument on the floor and ask for the earliest possible vote by his fellow-Senators. |
