Show INCREASE IN THE NAVY Formidable Additions Recommended H by Dewey's Board. CHICAGO, Nov. 2 A dispatch to the ' Tribune from Washington sayB: A formidable yet necessary Increase In the navy has been recommended by the general board of which Admiral Dewey Is president It was learned i yesterday that this body has asked the President and Secretary Bonaparte to urge Congress to authorize the following follow-ing ships during the coming session. H Three battleships of a displacement which will enable them to carry at ! least ten 12-Inch breech-loading guns. I Six torpedo boat destroyers. Six torpedo boats. Four submarine boats In order to carry the number of guns proposed by the general board, the dis-placement dis-placement authorized for the battleships battle-ships must reach at lpast 18,000 tons. A recommendation hHs been made also that Congress Increase the displacement dis-placement of the battleships Idaho and Mississippi from 16,000 to 18,000 tons, In order that they may be equipped, with a heavy battery of 12-lnch guns, but It Is not at all certain that this recommendation recom-mendation will be made to Congress, because Chief Naval Constructor Capps has devised a plan for arming these vessels with eight weapons of the huge caliber desired. This will he double the number of 12-inch guns now carried cn any ship In the navy. In framing the report Admiral Dewey .nd the general board have applied the lessonB of the Russo-Japanese war. |
