Show DROPS ON SHARK'S BACK Arizonon Has Thrilling Experience While Pi3hing. LONG BEACH, Aug. 9. S. W, Pur-cell Pur-cell of Tucson, Ariz., fell from a launch on top of a seyen-foot shark while fishing fish-ing off the Banks here today. Both survived, but It Is a question which was the more frightened. Purcell was on the Twilight with Capt. Will Graves, who went out to Inspect In-spect his lines. Stripped hooks told of the visit of a shark and a large hook, baited with salt pork, was thrown out, with the Arizona man on the dry end. The launch had not traveled twice its length when there was a tug and a churning of water which hft no doubt as to the sort of fish that had been struck. Lifting aloft the heavy gaff and steadying himself as best he could, Purcell Pur-cell waited until Graves gave the word and then he struck. At the same Instant three unforeseen things happened. The Twilight gave a lurch; the shark dave; and Purcell missed his footing. The gaff missed the shark by six feet but the man from Arizona landed squarely on the big fish's back. Graves quickly hauled the fisherman aboard the Twilight and as he had no desire for further sport, cut the line and allowed the shark to make off. Graves says the shark was a big one, measuring measur-ing not less than seven feet. Purcell cays seventeen feet, and declares he ought to know. |
