Show SOME STARTLING INQUIRIES. "An Earnest Advocate of Good Government'' Gov-ernment'' Inquired bf The Tribune: 1, la It true that Senator P.eed Smoot placed his own son on the Senate payroll pay-roll nt "Washington as a Government employee'' 2 Is It true that Senator Smooth son drew pay as an employee of the Senate while he was in Utah performing perform-ing no public BefVlCe, and that his monthly check was sent to him here 3. Is it true that honest applicants for honest work were turned down by Senator Reed Smoot so that he could make room on the rolls for his own progeny, that such progeny might draw pay and make no return therefor? 4. Is It true that Senator Reed Smoot, an apostle of the Mormon church, was sent to Washington by his people for the purpose of establishing the rule of righteousness in the world to Phow to the wicked Gentile Senators the holy way In which God would have government conducted? 5. Is It true that Senator-Apostle Smoot preunded to such a mission in order to catch the votes of his gullible people, (hat he sought the flr--t opportunity oppor-tunity to fall from grace and become like the people of Babylon, plunging his arm into the public treasury as fat-as fat-as a wicked custom would permit, and showing on'y bj his example new wnys to graft the public and loot the treasury? treas-ury? The Tribune approaches an answer to these startling Inquiries with an urgent ur-gent recommendation to the "earnest advocate of good government" to realize that It Is the mission of "Israel " in this epoch to despoil the "enemies of Gnd's kingdom;" nnd as the people and Government of the United States are held to be "enemies'' by the chief hierarch and his satellites, including postlo Smoot, that the latter individual indi-vidual Is only "obeying counsel" when he takes all that he can get. without regard to ethics which would be an useless incumbrance, anyway! Specifically meeting the question, The Tribune has heard upon what seems to be most credible authority that Mr. Smoot did turn down some honest and needy applicants for placet at Washington that he did procure the placing of his son's name upon the rolls; and that his son did draw pay for an ostensible service rendered at Washington while the young man himself him-self was really in Utah. But whether that authority was correct in that statement The Tribune cares little. Apostle Smoot's action in that regard is not nearly so important a public consideration as is the general effect of his election. The poor little pilfering suggested in the questions, even if ho did engage in it (as The Tribune does not charge), s a trifling loss to the public compared with the flagrant Wrong;, the utter demoralization, the corruption of ecdesiasticlsm in politics, poli-tics, which have been established by hls apostolic entrance into public life Though he were to graft ten times one place, and all for his own family, the little sin would be swallowed up in the greater one of the general wrong by which this community has been Involved In-volved In a conflict from which there Is no escape except by the path of community com-munity battle. The insinuation in the questions that Apostle Smoot pretended to be called of God to reform the Government must be answered by the Information that this was a part of that general hollow and satirical pretense which Is made by the hieranhy Affecting to be called by the Father of All to a special mission mis-sion for the redemption of all, the hierarch. hie-rarch. and such favorites as obediently follow his example, are engaged in worshiping mammon, advancing themselves them-selves In worldly pride and power, performing per-forming no real ser ice for therr own people, afcd dishoncrlng mankind by making the claim that they alone are authorized of God to govern mankind. Bad as it would be, if Senator Smoot had grafted, and had used his son as in accomp'lce. Walls pretending to be called of heaven to regenerate the world, (as. of course, The Tribune does not charge), this venial sin would be l. i less important than the wrong Which he has perpetrated against the State and th3 Nation, by his connivance con-nivance with the law-defying and treason-teaching hierarchy. |
