Show REDUCES DOCKAGE CHARGES. Puget Sound Navy Yard Asked Too Much for Private "Work. WASHINGTON. Feb. 1 Assistant Secretary Sec-retary Darling of the navy had a brief conforeneo with tho President today, bringing to his attention some departmental depart-mental matters. A few weeks ago the Boston Steamship company, which operates oper-ates a lino of stenmshlps between the Pacific Pa-cific const and tho Philippines, complained to tho Navy department and to tho President Presi-dent that the charges of tho Bremerton naval station on Puget Sound for tho dockage of ships were excessive. The statement was mado that Iho ships could bo docked at Esquimault, British Columbia, for about one-third of tho charges at Bremerton. The steamship company desired to have repairs made to ono of Its big vessels, tho Shawmut, at the American yard, but objected to the high charges After consjdorlng tho subject sub-ject Assistant Secretary Darling has decided de-cided to order a reduction of the charges to less than 50 per cent of the old rates for ships of more than 4000 tons. 1 hla concession, Mt Is believed, will bo satisfactory satis-factory to tho vessel owners. |
