Pinkorton Cnlls Attention to Mysterious Law Which Per- vndes All Nature "We were not born to- die, but to live," said the Rev. T. W. Pinkerton i in his sermon yesterday morning. This j principle was the main theme of his discourse in the Central Christian church. "Death Is the servant of life," he -went on, "and in each order of life the principle is demonstrated." i pr. Plnkerton's text was taken from Hj j the twenty-third chapter of Ianlah. He said, In part: i "Perhaps there Is no question in 1 which we shall find a larger latitude of opinion than that of the atonement And r have no Intention of afflicting you with mine this morning. But I do elc-sire elc-sire to call your attention to a principle that I believe Is Involved in all that Chrjst did and suffered in his life and death, nnd Is universal. I "Does the vicarious principle find expression ex-pression in all parts of the universe, or Is It something which comes Into prominence and culminates only In the supremo event of human history, the death of Jesus Christ? "I believe that it Is universal. It is not only true In human relationships, but Is true wherever life Is found. Death Not Supreme Event, j "Death Is not the supreme event in ' being. We were not born to die, but to live. And death Is the servant of life, and in each order of life the principle prin-ciple is demonstrated. Life cvrmote Is fed by Death, In earth and sea and sky. " "This principle Is emphasized In the aspects of the redeemer's life, and In all life In which Christ's spirit dwells service, suffering and sacrifice. God is evermore serving man. 'The universe uni-verse serves the individual, bringing to him what he can not do for himself.' "Vicarious service Is the law of being. It Is a mysterious and fearfvi thing to observe how all God's universe Is built on this law, how It penetrates and pervades per-vades all matters, so that If It were to cease, nature would cease to exIsL In the kingdom of God. he that will be ' greatest must be the servant of all. "One of the darkest mysteries that confronts the mind Is the problem of suffering. Not only do the guilty suf-i suf-i icr, but the Innocent suffer for tho guilty. All about are hearts weeping on account of the sins of others. Not long ago my old father said to me: My heart Is broken.' Because of a foolish mother's desire that her daughter daugh-ter might have standing in so-called society. By constant exposure, she went to an untimely grave. Breath pauses on my lips to moan, As one alone, once not alone. I sit and knock at Nature's door, Ifeart-sore, heart-hungry, very poor, Whose desolated days go on. Glory of Being to Serve. "This principle Is not involved in punishment. pun-ishment. Among all on the earth and in spheres of light It Is the glory of j being to humble Itself In service "and i suffering and sacrifice to save being. And the loftier the sphere and the more glorious the Intelligence, the more gladly glad-ly Is the privilege embraced, until at last, searching the supreme and Ineffable Inef-fable In effulgence, which no eye can endure. In the splendor of infinities and eternities where light and love are one, we are brought face to face with the throne in the midst of which is, as It ;were, a 'Lamb which had been slain.' " |
