Show THE SEASONABLE BENEFACTIONS. The spirit of Christmas giving was well In evidence In Salt Lake on this grout Christian anniversary The feasts were many, the ability to help was ample, am-ple, and pains w-pre taken to seareli out any who might be In need, and minister minis-ter to their wants. The unfortunate were comforted as far as might be: the orphans were cheered, th distressed were relieved, the victims of their own evil pronensltles nnd deeds v re is-lled, is-lled, and tholr lot soothed with such remembrance as, humanly speaking, might do them good All this was done in large and commendable com-mendable measure by good people in this city at this Christmas season And yet, doubtless, some who are needy were overlooked, some who were In want did not receive relief. It Is always al-ways thp case that in a large place, the means are nol sufficient to the needful end. Only the most persistent and urgent, ur-gent, systematic effort can reach every cuse. This suggests that the hands of the general relief committee, which wac organised or-ganised here some time ago. should be further strengthened; and that whenever when-ever necessary auxiliary methods should be called Into action. It must always be kept In mind that a Christmas Christ-mas relief Is yoon expended, and that without constant renewal, the recipient Is liable to be as badly off alnv?i Immediately Im-mediately as before that relief was received. re-ceived. It Is a Joyous season, and light worthily have the people risen to Its ieejulroments and opportunities. Shall we not be made able to say that the benefactions of the time have ber-n grandly extended throughoui the whole of this year, and also of the new year about to begin, w h never there Is a case of genuine need ? |
