He was first kndwn as the directing force of tho Indianapolis Journal, a newspaper that bad more to do with the earlier political politi-cal success of Benjamin Harrison and Charles W. Fairbanks than any other agency. He has been repeatedly honored hon-ored by Indlanans, though be is. not in any sense an ofilcc-seekcr. He declined de-clined tho First Assistant Postmaater-Generalshlp, Postmaater-Generalshlp, a Cabinet portfolio and the best consular appointment in the President's gift. He is one of the President's Presi-dent's dearest friends, both personally and politically. Ho was a member of the National committee In 1900, and was re-elected In 3904, being in charce of the campaign cam-paign in the Central and Western States. He has a particular affection for the West, and recently wrote to a friend In Salt Lake that If he were not so tied up In Indiana be would certainly take up bis home in one of the Intermountaln States, which he bolieves have a great rfuture.
