Show ROBERTS AT OGDEN. Closes tho Democratic Campaign With I Appeal for Powers. Special to The Tribune. ! OGDEN, Nov. V. The last big rally ot i tho campaign w-as held tonight by the j Democrats at the Grand opera-house. B. ' II. Roborts was the principal speaker. It ; was the first appearance of Mr. Roberts In the campaign In AVeber county and ho was greeltd with a big audlenco. He confined con-fined his address almost entirely to National, Na-tional, Issues, devoting nearly an hour to tho trust 'luestlon alone. He then referred re-ferred to the local situation, extolling the virtues of tho various candidates on tho Democratic ticket and made particular appeals for tho election of Judge Powers and C. S. Varlan. lie delivered a scorching scorch-ing arraignment of those who have attacked at-tacked Judge Powers, particularly the ar-tlclo ar-tlclo that was printed in a Salt Lake paper pa-per regarding tho Judge's personal history. his-tory. Ho reviewed the candidates upon tho Weber county ticket and made a strong appcnl to the voters to vote their ticket straight. Ho predicted that Parker would be elected President and that Utah would go tho same way. In view of tho spilt In tho National Republican party. Tho close of the campaign In tho county coun-ty has not materially changed the situation situa-tion and both sides nro (Ulll claiming a victory. Chairman HulanskI of tho Republican Re-publican central committee snld that ho will carry the county by an average majority ma-jority of about 1000. This, however, Is generally conceded to bo far In excess of tho llnnl result. Tho county Is unquestionably unques-tionably Republican, but tho local conditions condi-tions aro so badly mixed that It Is probable prob-able that not 20 per cent of the Republican Repub-lican votes will bo cast straight. The es-timnto es-timnto of 1000 Is probably not too large for tho Presidential electoro, but on tho other hand, Indications are that tho break In tho Republican ranks Is likely to elect several Democratic candidates. Chairman Johnson of the Democratic committee expresses conlldcnco that ha will carry the county. Ho bases his prediction pre-diction upon tho vote In tho city. He gives no llgures. but thinks that the deflection In the city will overcome the Republican majority In outside precincts. There is likely to bo rather sensational developments during tho day. As baa already al-ready been published, tho Democratic committee Is asserting and It was openly charged by Chairman Johnson at tho Grand opera-houso tonight that the Republicans Re-publicans in the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth district had registered hund'cds of illegal voters, and that a number of arrests would surely follow if they attempted to voto them. One of tho Democratic candidates can-didates told The Tribune tonight thnt they wero determined to prevent thoso men from voting, and would do so If thov had to call In the United Slates Marshal. At Hunlsvllle tonight tho Republicans worked a clever dodgo on tho Democrats to prevent them from holding a closing meeting There arc but three jAiblio halls in the town and the Republicans rented nil three of these and prepared to use one f them for their closing rally. Not to be outdone, the Democrats secured a private pri-vate residence nnd gave a big banq jet and smoker and Invited everybody In Ogdun valley to attend. Needless to say. tho Democrats got tho crowd. |
