Show UNBUILDING THE STATE. The foundation of this Stato wns laid by the Mormon people. An observer Is justified In the belief that the leaders of the Mormon people prop.oao to unbuild the superstructure which has been so magnificently erected erect-ed by Gentiles and Mormons alike. If that in not the defined purpose of the ecclesiastical domlnators in this community, It Is difficult to conceive that they are guided by any purpose other than the swiftly revolving whims of an unlntcllectnal leader. Going no further bnck than the time Immediately antecedent to the election of Reed Smoot we have this repeated succession of Injurious events: Reed Smoot Is permitted to become a candidate for the Senate The Mormon people arc rallied regardless re-gardless of personal political ainilationB to the support of one of their apostles. The advice of the President of the . United States Is spurned and his name Is Insulted In public and in privnte, because be-cause of his daring to interfere even by advice In the affairs of this State. Reed Smoot Is elected; his right to his seat Is protested: and his answer demands testimony by nearly all the church leaders. An investigation nt Washington before be-fore the Senate Committee on Privileges Privi-leges and Elections uncovers such a state of affairs In Utah-that the American Amer-ican people are absolutely stunned. Ample warning Is given by public sentiment of a gathering rage ngainst the people of Utah, and still the leaders are heedless. They permit Senator and Apostle Smoot to become the dictator in political politi-cal affairs In the dominant party of this State, using his apostolic lnfiuence more than his political office to retain his autocracy. They permit President Brigham II. Roberts to parade himself as a political politi-cal teacher in this State to effect the purpose of the church in dividing-the offices between the two National parties par-ties In order to silence antagonism from both. They are apparently determined to create the impression, which was prevalent prev-alent In Illinois, that no political tlo and no bond of honor Is of any value in their eyes. They are steadily forcing forc-ing the National leaders of both parties par-ties Into tho opinion, which was entertained enter-tained In Illinois, that the only safe Way to deal with the Mormon people, is to take from them all political power. The leaders are proving that they are the worst living enemies of thclr'fol-low"!rs. thclr'fol-low"!rs. They are Jeopardizing the political po-litical rights of the mass and they are even Invoking attack upon the Enabling Act by which Utah was admitted Into the Union for they are flagrantly and undeniably violating the two pledges upon which that act was granted. In any other State the people would rise en masse against such cruel, ignorant igno-rant and destructive leadership. If they fall to do so here they -will find when too late that their self seeking ecclesiastics ecclesias-tics have torn down the edifice which was bullded, with suffering and with patient Industry, by Mormons and Gentiles Gen-tiles alike. Instead of calling themselves the builders of a commonwealth, the leaders lead-ers may soon be designated as the un-bullders un-bullders of a State. |
