Joseph goes along in tho capacity ca-pacity of hla chief understudy. These will bo supported by as bright a galaxy of lieutenants, colonels and "boosters" as can be turned out by any city In the country. ' " " "Utah Has No Strikes." The central part of the diagram will be an outline of tho map of Utah, within the limits of which' will be printed the figures of her mineral output, while from Salt Lake City will extend lines, like the spokes of a wheel, showing the distances from this city to other points, Including San Francisco, 851 miles; Portland, SG5 miles; Los Angeles, 77S miles; Denver, Col miles; Butte, 131 miles; Leadvllle, 500 miles; Cheyenne, 535 miles; Boise, 379 miles; El Paso, 1220 miles; Omaha, 1017 miles. These cards and badges will be placed in the hands or on the clothing of every delegate to the congress and every one else In Portland who can be induced to take them, and it Is believed that with the other work done they will win out. The delegation held at the Commercial club last night Its final meeting before departing for the scene of conquest. Fisher Harris was chairman of the meeting and W. II. TIbbals secretary. Reports from committees were heard disclosing tho progress made ln securing secur-ing from the City Council a site for the permanent home for the congress, making known the offer of the Mormon church authorities to donate the use of the Assembly hall for temporary headquarters of the congress until Its own building should be completed, nnd telling of success ln effecting virtually all of the preliminaries necessary for tho delegation to be In position to make the congress a definite and attractive proposition, and one which It is believed will win. 1 Committees Appointed. John Dern and O. W. Powers were appointed a committee to solicit additional addi-tional funds needed for advertising and other necessary expenses; H. S. Joseph, W. J. Halloran and Fisher Harris were .appointed a committee on printing, and Joseph and Harris' were directed to ascertain definitely today the name of every person who wljl go with the delegation. dele-gation. It is desired that every one who has received an appointment on the delegation who cannot attend make formal resignation of the position, so that another can be appointed to fill his place. It is also suggested that gentlemen gentle-men 'who are not delegates, who may desire to take advantage of. the special rate to Portland, report at the Commercial Com-mercial club today, when they will be given places on the delegation. The City Council Is expected to lako final action Monday night In the matter of donating for a site for the congress building the 5CxlC5-foot lot on Fourth South street, opposite the city and county building, when Fisher Harris, secretary of the Commercial club, will send a telegram to tho delegation in Portland informing it of the action. |
