Show HAYASHI HOPES FOR PEACE. Japanese Minister Fears' His Country Would Be Bonton. London, Jan. 17. In particularly frank language Baron Hayashl. after consultation with the foreign ofiicc tonight, to-night, summed up the situation for the Associated Press as follows: "I only hope the Czar will give us peace; but my hopes arc not strong. If wo go to war it will be for issues whereon both America and England have Insisted, diplomatically. We have received no pledges from any country that in the event of defeat It will step In and save us from being absorbed by tremltles on the armed support of any nation In the world. It would be a struggle to the death. Perhaps we are not strong enough to light Russia, There are two opinions about that." Baron Hayashl Intimated that ho thought Japan was bound to be beatc-n In the end. ' "If we were boaten," the Minister resumed, re-sumed, "Russia would take Korea and i Manchuria by right of conquest and possibly Japan. No power on earth I could then dislodge her from central , China and all the Far East. I am sure It Is better to go to war when you know you arc right even If defeat is possible, possi-ble, than to see your Independence 3ub- ' merged under a continued aggression ' that Is bound to absorb you eventually. 1 Nothing can avert war between Russia 1 and Japan In "future years, even If peace 1 la procured now, so long as Russia pur- 1 sues her present Far Eastern policy. "Tho American action In enforcing i tho opening of the Manchurian ports ( was a splendid example of honest dl- j plomaey. It was a straightforward step which contrasts favorably with Russian ( methods. No other nation, except Great Britain, when the British Admirnlty bought the two Chilean warships, has taken any practical stop to live up to its diplomatic demands upon Russia aneut the Far East. We believe wo are now fighting a diplomatic battle In behalf of 1 America and Great Britain, but, If only war,,can settle it, we know wo shall re- eelve assistance from neither, 5Ve are prepared to fight our own battles and take the consequences." j |
