Fredericks was the principal witness In the trial of Charles Mclghan for misappropriation misappropria-tion of funds In Judge Marshalls court yesterday He testified to the discovery of a shortage In the Ogden < postmasters account last April and his fruitless efforts to unravel the tangle of bookkeeping book-keeping which made It Impossible to I determine what had become of the I missing funds UP AGAINST IT Fredericks stated that tht > audit of I the books for the period from January I 1st to April 15th showed a shortage of SH47SO He Informed Melghan of the I condition of affairs nnd the postmaster postmas-ter remarked that he was up against It He did not question the accuracy of the totals but was unable to explain where the money had gone While the Investigation continued IH said Frederloks I asked Mel htlll why he did not come to the office and assist us In looking over the accounts He replied that he had been so completely knocked out by the events that he did not feel like being around HARD TO LOCATE It appeared fiom the Inspectors testimony tes-timony that the Ogden postomcc was obliged to pay out large sums In advance ad-vance of its receipts one Hem being 14000 a quarter for the salaries of railway rail-way mall clerks During the Mclghan regime the accounts were not kept separate sepa-rate as they should have been and when money was needed for one department de-partment It was taken from the funds of another On this account the Inspectors Inspec-tors found It very difficult to locate exactly ex-actly where the deficiency belonged and a shortage of 5600 discovered In December Decem-ber 1001 wan charged up against the postmaster with no attempt made for a settlement NO EXPLANATION OFFERED When the Inspector went over the moneyorder account with Mclghan he said the latter made no attempt to deny 01 explain away the deficit He said he assumed the totals were correct and he could net account for the discrepancy discrep-ancy he was not prepared he said to make the amount good I told Melghun that he was responsible respon-sible as postmaster for the deficit and If any of the employees had taken tho money the Government ought to be In forrrcd of It After some hesitation Melghan said If I do know I wont tell Former Assistant Postmaster Charles S Rapp walt called to the stand to identify Iden-tify certain applications for money orders or-ders Issued by the Ogden office nnd certain records pertaining to the moneyorder department Miss Edna Thomas a former employee of the Ogden Og-den office also tcstlilcd along the same lines The progress of the trial was followed with Interest by a large number of Mclghans friends who came from Ogden Og-den for the purpose The trial will be resumed today Returned Sealed Vordict The case of Kate Guthlel vs J T Gllmcr and 0 J Salisbury which has been on trial before Judge Stewart for the last three weeks went to the Jury yesterday afternoon The Jury remained re-mained out only a short
