Show READY FOR CONFERENCE Presidents Anthracite Coal Roads at Capital MITCHELL ALSO ARRIVES Operators It Is Said Will Decline Any Plan of Settlement Which Proposes to Treat With Mitchell Will Propose That Men Return to Work With Understanding That Their Grievances Shall Bo Submitted Sub-mitted to Board of Arbitration to Be Appointed by Soosevelt Washington Oct 3The Post will say tomorrow that the coal presidents at tomorrows conference will decline to accept any plans of settlement which propose to treat with President Mitchell Mitch-ell but that they have considered a tentative plan according to which the coal presidents would propose that the men return to work with the understanding under-standing that their grievances Individuals Indi-viduals shall bo submitted to a board of arbitration and that the coal presidents presi-dents will agree to abide by the decision of thl3 board the members of which shall be appointed by the President OPERATORS ARRIVE The special train with the presidents of the anthracite coal roads arrived In Washington shortly after D oclock They did not leave their cars and their train was switched to a siding In the yards of the Baltimore Ohio railroad for the night Retlccnc was shown by the railroad men here concerning the movements of the special train bearing the coal road presidents It reached hero not long after the limited express and then a switch engine took It to the yards at Ecklngton a suburb about three miles from the business part of townQUAY QUAY AT THE WHITE HOUSE Senator Quay of Pennsylvania was In conference with tho President for an hour today and It Is understood he came here at the request of the President to discuss the strike situation The Senator and President were not interrupted in-terrupted and two Cabinet officers who callqd did l not see the President while the conference was in progress Senator Sena-tor Quay nttcr He left the President would not discuss the situation nor express ex-press an opinion as to the probable effect ef-fect of the coming conference CONFERS WITH CABINET During the day Secretary Root At torneyGeneral Knox and Secretary Shaw were in conference with the President Pres-ident Secretary Wilson wan at the White House for a short time but the first named remained with the President Presi-dent for nearly an hour Jt Is believed that the President discussed the conference confer-ence tomorrow the Cabinet ofllcers making a number of suggestions as to what the President should say to those who will partIcipate WHO WILL RE PRESENT It has been decided that Attorney General Knox shall attend the confer frncc tomorrow between the Presldeht and the coal operators Carroll D Wright Commissioner of Labor also will attwd MITCHELL ARRIVES President John Mitchell of the United Mine Workers mmnti MCSSTS NIcholle DtifCy and Fahey arrived here at 1 oclock this Friday mornjng The party walked to a hotel near the railroad rail-road station where they took quarters for time night Mr Mitchell refused absolutely ab-solutely to talk about the conference with President Roosevelt |
