| Show ABATE THE HOMICIDES The death of A S Watson yesterday from the pistol shot fired by Clyde H Ellison emphasizes the remarks heretofore here-tofore mado In those columns In censure cen-sure of the shooting habit and In condemnation con-demnation the conditions hero that have led to so many homicides Tho situation la h most serious one certainly cer-tainly there must be found a remedy It Is intolerable that there should be such frequent bloodshed such a dark blot on our civilization The officers must be more alert and there Is aloud a-loud call for reform In tho courts In the way of more speedy procedure The delays arc so constant and no prolonged nnd when the cases are called there Is so much sparring to no public good that tho people are worn out with the tediousness of It all and would gladly provide a remedy outside i the courts If there were a remedy possible pos-sible But there Is I not unless the Legislature hhculd sweep away some of the the obstructions by remedial statutes We believe however that the true remedy IB with the courts themselves It certainly cannot ben be-n rceablo to any Judge to have the weary drags that have characterized many of the cases They should enforce en-force a simpler practice get back to the Idea of doing business In a business way and hold the attorneys up to a prompt and dlligenl handling of their cases without haggling and without hindrance that Is merely a hindrance That would be a great step In advance and If toit could be added an alert and nummary prosecution the terror of the law might be relied on to stop much of the shooting The carrying of firearms la a dangerous dan-gerous nuisance We have dwelt upon this heretofore Tho Bale of1 pstoln might well be minounded by some of the precautions now required In the sale of polaons A license to purchase might bo required or a showing of real need of the arm A tax on the gun might also ho a help And the peace officers should be diligent In arresting ar-resting nil who carry concealed weapons wea-pons v ponfherc There will have to be a reform In these matters of carrying weapons and In using them far BO as shooting men and women Is concerned or else the community will bo driven tome day to the commission of home desperate deed It Is betler to be warned In time and no wo call upon all concerned to enforce en-force the laws and the ordinances to punish vigorously and speedily those who commit homicide and to break up the deadly habit of carrying concealed weapons |
