Show FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE Department of Agriculture Asks Congress for Money to Stamp Out Plague Among Cattle WasbInKton Doc 9 The Department of Agriculture has appealed to the House committee on agriculture to aid the department in stamping out the foot and mouth disease which has appeared ap-peared among cattle In New England asking that an emergency appropriation appropria-tion of 500000 to LOOO000 be made The committee is l advised that there arc about 100 herds which In the opinion opin-ion of the department must be slaughtered slaugh-tered The committee Is also advised that It Is the opinion of the department officials that the disease wan transmitted trans-mitted through hay shipped from abroad Secretary Wilson In his letter to Congress Con-gress sent through the Secretary of the Treasury says About two weeks ago Information came to the department depart-ment that the disease existed In Massachusetts Massa-chusetts Rhode Island Vermont and Connecticut Cooperation of the Governors Gov-ernors of the Suites amid the State boards having control of contagious diseases dis-eases of animals has been secured The effective method of eradicating time disease dis-ease Is to arrange with the iocal authorities au-thorities for the destruction of the affected af-fected and exposed animals which together to-gether with the disinfection of stables and yards and their quarantine to prevent further spread la now being1 done The disinfection of cars used in transportation of such animals also Is necessary Arrangements also have been made and will continue to be made with transportation companies to have all the cars which have been used fon rtaxr dnp animals from Infected Stales thoroughly disinfected The scourge has not visited this country before for nearly twenty years Quick work Is neecssary owing to the rapidity with which the disease travels The product of our domestic animals Is over 200000000 uuinually and our exports of animals amid animal products amount to a quarter of a billion bil-lion dollars earn year This scourge costs Continental Europe and Asiatic countries iiormous sums of money annually an-nually They do not seem to be able to eradicate It The British people have visitations of it occasionally but promptly stamp It out We live In the hope that the application of scientific methods eventually will cleat the country coun-try of all contagious diseases of aid ma IF IFWhile While every effort IK making to localize lo-calize the disease In the infecled States then Is danger that the cars used In tarrying tIme animnls to market may Introduce It Into other parts of the country We are ready to send an efficient effi-cient eorpts of experts at oure In any locality to deal with any outbreak |
