Show ii STOP GAMBll G Chief Paul So Instructed by Council LIKEWISE SUNDAY TRAFFIC Resolution Passed by City Council Directing Chief of Police to Cloco All GamblingHouses and to Exert Every Influence to Enforce Sunday Closing Clause Onsls Saloon License Li-cense Not Bovoked Council to Meet With Commercial Club Committees Com-mittees to Consider Water Problem I Last evenings session of the City Council was devoted for the most part to a discussion of municipal reform an outgrowth of the discussion being the acceptance of 0 resolution Instructing the Chief of Police to close all gam blinghouses that arc running openly In the city in violation of the ordinances Tho Sundayclosing problem also came In for Its full share of attention and the suggestion was made that the head of tho Police department should exert all the Influences at his command to stop Sunday liquor traffic The resolution objecting to gambling houses was presented by Councilman I IDardlcy In presenting the matter before be-fore the Council Councilman Eardley explained that the administration had pledged Itself to enforce a strict observance observ-ance of all ordinances He maintained that gamblinghouses arc not reported to be running openly and that such a condition of affairs Is a detriment to the municipality Councilman Cottrell also delivered himself on the subject speaking strongly In favor of the adoption of the resolution l what Ive heard about the condition of affairs be true said Mr Cottrell the Police department depart-ment Is falling a long way short of performing Ity duty We cannot consistently con-sistently license these Snmbln houses and therefore our duty Is obvious The resolution wan adopted by unanImous unan-imous vote I reads as follows Whereas I Is commonly reported hat gamblinghouses are openly running run-ning In this city against the city ordinance ordi-nance therefore be It Resolved That the Chief of Police be and Is I hereby Instructed to close all Kamblinphouacs that are running contrary con-trary to the ordinances made and provided pro-vided LICENSE NOT REVOKED The liquor license of the Oasis saloon sa-loon scene of thr StrongRomney mur ncr wns not revoked after nn explanation expla-nation hid been made before tIme Council Coun-cil by Jacob Morlts representing the Salt Lake Brewing company MorItz ant forth that he had secured a liquor Iccnsc for the t Oa3h when It wa run by C Bonnpttl and that he had scoured sc-oured no second licence when JBonnettl 11 He ncomlsed to see to It that a > etipr class of tenants are acrurcd for the saloon in the Cuturo and that it will be run In an orderly manner and In observance of the law On motion I Councilman Thomas the mnter was tnlcrn out otthp hfinda of the license committee and Urn I Oasis allowed u renewal I STREET BLOCKADED Attention was directed to a blockade at North Temple and Ninth West streeta caused by a loop which Ir being thrown across the street by the Consolidated Railway and Power company com-pany at that point The Street Supervisor Super-visor was instructed to at once ntop the company from further blockading the street CORDON WATER RIGHT An offer to sell or lease to the city the Gordon water right was submitted to the Council by J P Cahoon and Peter Gordon The Gordon water right has for thirty years past been leased by the Hanauer smelter I Is estimated esti-mated that the water from that source Is about equal to the supply from the canyons and that It would about double dou-ble the citys supply The matter was referred to the special Committee on Reservoir Sites The appointment of James Mackle asa as-a member of the Fire department was presented by Chief Devlne and referred to the Committee on Fire Department TO CONSIDER WATER PROBLEM To give adequate consideration to the perplexing water problem It was decided that the Council meet as 0 committee com-mittee of the whole with the Commercial Commer-cial club committees a week from Wednesday evening I was also decided de-cided that the Council leave for the Inspection of the pumping station at the source of the river Thursday morning morn-ing at 8 oclock over the Rio Grande restern |
