Salt Lake was found dead in her room at 117 West FortyPlghth street today She wan employed In the dressmaking establishment es-tablishment of Mme Oatman 16 West Thirtyninth street At the same time she had thousandn of dollars worth of jewelry and dresses In her room and was dreEGcd as though having plenty of money According to Mme Oatman the woman wo-man came to her about two weeks ago from Salt Lake City She secured board at Mrs Emily Snedds She took the hest room In tho place and was thought to be rich LETTER FROM SALT LAIE She worked steadily In the shop until un-til about a week ago when there came a letter to her In care of her employer I On the corner of the envelope was printed Walker Bros Dry Goods Salt Lake It was postmarked Salt Lalce September 13th ALMOST FAINTED OVER NEWS When Mme Oatman pave It to her I the young woman opened the letter In the formers presence There was nothing noth-ing In it but a newspaper clipping When she read It she became very pale and almost fainted She was unable Ito I-to work any more and left the shop She never returned EMPLOYER CALLS AT HOUSE I Today Mme Oatman went to her boardinghouse to Inquire why she had not come to work Mrs Sneed told her that the girl had been seen about the house yesterday by one of the other boarder but she admitted that she had riot t seeii her + for several days DEAD IN HER BED Together the two women went to her room They could not get In and sent for Detective Lcymeycr He broke In the door Miss Gruner was on the bed fully dressed Her arms were above her head Her face way black and ao were her arms to her elbow She appeared ap-peared to have been dead several days FOUND BY HER BEDSIDE By the bed on a chair was a paper on which were some white crystals There was also on the bed a clipping which had come In the letter from Salt Lake It was headed Secretly Wed I dad It told of the marriage of Fred T McGurrln a lawyer to Mrs Estelle McCrystal In Colorado Springs last May The secret had Just leaked out and some kind friend had apparently sent Mills Cruner the news SEARCH OF HER EFFECTS A further search of the womans effects ef-fects disclosed a torn store bill l hl hon h-on being fitted together showed it had been made out to Miss Gruner Roy Watrous of 67 East Third South street Salt Lake City It was for 3G75 for lettering a box There was also part of a bill from Dr S Stiefel of Salt Lake CORONER DECLARES IT MURDER Coroner Jackson declared tonight the girl had been murdered He found blood In her mouth and other Indications that she had been strangled Cigar ashes were found on the mantel and floor indicating the recent presence of a man In the room THEORY OF POLICE Further Investigation Into the death of Miss Gruner satisfies the police that It was duo to natural causes though of a somewhat peculiar nature Their theory Is that the young woman In a violent lit of emotion had burst a blood vessel WELL KNOWN IN SALT LAKE Dead Woman Had Resided Hare for Ten Years Miss Marie Gruner Is well known in Salt Lake having come here about ten years ago aB a professional hattrimmer and milliner She Is said to have been always an adept at the art of decorating decorat-ing and ornamenting womens attire t 1 and for this reason she wao engaged by Madame Oatman In New York city I before the latter started West They stopped together In Denver where Miss Gruner worked at her profession under Madame Oatman and later they removed re-moved to Salt Lake and were engaged I by the Walker Bros store here During the first year of her residence in Salt Lake she lived at the Walker I Terrace on South West Temple street Later she moved to the Miller hotel where she remained for several years I I She was exceptionally neat In her dress Jan J-an always wore Immaculate qostumos 1 the girls most intimate friends here to say thatMiey believe she committed suicide However How-ever a woman who seems to have been 1 the nearest friend of Miss Gruncr here was found last night and Mid that it I was not so BORE EXCELLENT REPUTATION Mr Graham of Walkers store stated yesterday that tho dead girl was an expert skirt maker and had given excellent ex-cellent satisfaction while In their employ em-ploy Her first experience In i that line was got at a shop belonging to Madame Oatman at 16 West Thirtyninth street New York city Mr Graham said thero was always an opening for her here If she committed suicide It Is said her motive for doing so wan not the lack of money or employment and It Is said that she had considerable property in this vicinity In addition to being a heavy stockholder In several mining corporations I IN POSSESSION OF FORTUNE I So far aH known the woman had no relations except possibly an uncle who It Is thought lives somewhere In the East As she spoke very little about herself no one knew anything of her I family though through the death of a relative In New York several s months ago she became the possessor of say oral thousands of dollars but
