| Show A SORROWFUL ANNIVERSARY One year ago today Prqsldcnt William Wil-liam McKinley died from the bullet of a detestable assassin Some of the Governors of States have by proclamation proclama-tion called for memorial services In the churches In view of this grlcvouo event I IB entirely fit and especially appropriate appro-priate that such commemorative services ser-vices should be held for Wllllarri Mo ICJnlcy wuj preeminently i 1 Christian man his life exemplified the great precepts pre-cepts of Chrlrtlanlty I was a pure life patriotic and devoted He harbored har-bored no malice to any man he lived above reproach In all his doings ho was sincere earnest and of a kindly heart that failed no requirement In private life ho was stainless in public life a model Ills only thought from youth to age was to be of service to his fellowmen and of use to his coun felowmel try IJe made himself master of statecraft state-craft that he might the more beneficially bene-ficially ere the public he won popularity pop-ularity by his candor friendliness and unfailing courtesy Of all great ofll clals none was so pleasant to meet IB he from none other could such a kindly kind-ly I greeting come by none else could one feel so sure of being held In memory mem-ory His greeting caused the heart to glow hlu attention to the desires or needs of the visitor was unexampled hla parting was a benediction With ample reason his bier wns wet with tea and a mourning nation spoke of him as the best beloved To all mankind he was brave and true No higher type of courageous manhood ever was shown than that which ho exhibited at tho National Re publlcan convention in Minneapolis when In reply to those who persisted In voting for him for the nomination for President In spite of his explanation explana-tion that he was pledged to Benjamin Harrison Ho told those misguided men who would Inadvertently and through the mistaken zeal of friendship have put him in a false position that he did not request but demanded that they should cease their assaults upon his honor I was but a type of his rule of life When the nomination came to him In 189C it came aa the ripe fruit of welldeserved reward How nobly hs bore hlmsolC in that exalted office how the country rallied around him as Its finest exponent of the American Amer-ican statesman and leader how none but wordn of affection and respect came to be spoken of him how there grew up a Ceding that became universal that he was absolutely safe disinterested pure and worthy of perfect trust Is known of all how ho was Indorsed at his second candidacy by the most tremendous tre-mendous majority ever given to a Presidential candidate nil know His scat was absolute and unchallenged In the hearts of the American people and with ample reason for he was a man such as Americans delight to honor 1 Is meet thcrcfprc that this day be devoted to survlces in commemoration o his great life and character and In honoring his memory the American people show their appreciation of the finest Incarnation of our Institutions and show respect to themselves |
