Show UTAHS GAME RESOURCES Now Is a good time for those citizens of our State who take an Interest In our game supply to look to the future Now Is the time for action to bu taken Only three years ago the waters of the Slate were literally covered l during most of the year with aquatic fowl of almost every description The warm springs which abound In the central and western part of the State especially especial-ly about Salt Lake and along the Bear river afforded the finest of hatching grounds Last season the supply was not so plentiful an the previous year And this season waterfowl were as scarce sw one finds them in most States wheje game la infrequently found Why thin 5 sudden diminution of wildfowl wild-fowl In Utah And what may be done to replenish and protect the supply These are the questions The Tribune would like to have considered It maybe may-be that there Is a comparatively small percentage of our citizens who care for cither the gun or the rod but who Is there who cares not for the fruit of these tools of the sportsman Shooting Shoot-ing and fishing afford fine recreation and they attract to us thousands of men every season men who make good citizenship enliven thIngs and gave money One reason for the scarcity of waterfowl water-fowl in Utah the present season Is that there was little rainfall and little food for the birds Another the tules have been burned away in many places destroying de-stroying both protection and food and that the vast areas of tules are rapidly leaving no place for hatching It Is true that the vast areas of tules are rapidly disappearing Down on the Bear river during the early part of the present duck and gooseshooting season one could see fires in the marshes at almost any hour of the day or night This was the work of cureless or malicious persons per-sons who should have been promptly punished If It is necessary to provide water by trenches or otherwise or in any way to afford protection or food now is the time for action Delay until the birds have taken permanent home elsewhere should not he permitted The season has been shortened and the limit fixed In such manner as to afford protection bylaw by-law It is suggested that a committee from the various club members should get together and form a programme It would hardly seem necessary to reduce re-duce the length of the season or the I number oC birds one may shoot In a day but if Ills the Legislature will no doubt act when it convenes If it is water protection in the hatcheries or food that is necessary then the Legislature Legis-lature will undoubtedly assist In doing that which private parties cannot accomplish ac-complish alone But let there be something some-thing done for one of Utahs greatest attractions at-tractions and blessingsher water fowl |
