Show MIN NG MEN GONfER I American Congress Holds Sessions in Lead NUMBER SPEAKERS HEARD Director Mint Roberts Refers to Price ef Silver I Beliaves That White Metal Has Seen Its Worst Days and Will Maintain Standard Lead S D Sept 9loday the American Mining congress moved over Into Lead and after receiving n cordial welcome from Mayor E F Irwin on behalf of time city proceeded to transact the business of Us sixth annual session where Illef off at peadwood last night Three sessions were held today and with I day oft tomorrow to enable delegates dele-gates members and other attendants at t the congress to inspect the mines and mining paints in and near Lead and to visit Bald mountain Ruby Basin Ba-sin and Spcarfish canyon Three more sessions will be held in Lead on Friday and then the congress will go back to Dcadwood where It expects to conclude Its work on Saturday afternoon The principal speakers of todays three sessions were Hon George J3 Roberts dIrector of the mint lion John L Webster Omaha and Mr ID W Parker of the UnIted Slates geological survey AVashinglon D C Each was listened to with the closest attention and each was given I rising vole of thanks for honoring the congress by attending Us sessions and for well prepared pre-pared and interesting addresses Mr Roberts just before concluding referring to the recent increase In the value of silver said he believed silver had seen Its worst days and that It would before long reach and maintain a staple standard of value This statement I state-ment was received with a great burst I of applause This reference by the director of thc mini to silver led a Deadwood delegate to submit a resolution against any I further legislation by Congress lending lend-ing to restrict the further coinage of silver as real money or to depress Its I I value upon the market The resolu I tion the tending of which clicked some applause from the delegates was referred re-ferred to the committee on resolutions The address of Mr Parker which had nothing to do with gold seemed to be somewhat of a novelty to the majority of the members but was followed with evident interest I Other addresses at the afternoon I session were delivered by C W Merrill Mer-rill of Lead on Tim Metallurgy of Homestakc Ores and by Dr C C OHarrn of Rapid City S D on Geology and Mineralogy of Black His The later was Illustrated by charts and maps The chief feature 0 the evening session ses-sion was the address of John L Webster Web-ster of Omaha Dr E l ICIfon Sllverton Colo discussed dis-cussed The i Gold Ores of San Juan County It was decided to read resolutions which are to be submitted to the congress con-gress for acton Among these was one submitted by Edward F Brown of Del CI to petition the Congress of the United States to pass n law forming a department of mines and mining which should have the same standing ai the Department of Commerce and Labor La-bor to be administered by l a head regularly regu-larly appointed by the President and vho should take his official place wllh jther members of the Presidents Cabinet Cabi-net netA resolution was submitted by C TJ I Dignowity delegate Pennsylvania asklntr the mIning congress to net Minn Andrew Carnegie to build n suitable and permanent building at Washington D C for the exclusive benefit of the mining Interests of America Both resolutions were referred to the 1cenec regular committee I Reading of the constitution and bylaws by-laws to govern the American Mining congress which were drafted by the executive commIttee was called for After the secretary I finished tho rending the delegates voted lo postpone discussion discus-sion of these and they were made a special order for Friday morning John Blalchford of Terry S D read a paper on Ore Deposits of the Northern North-ern Black His after which the congress con-gress adjourned lo 20 p 1 m |
