Show CAlF PAUL OF POLICE DEPARTMENT I RESiGNS OFFICE Resignation Promptly Accepted Ac-cepted by the Mayor I SHEETS FAVORED FOR PLACE Strife Over Position Likely to Be Renewed Mayor Believes ExDel ectivo the Best Nan In Sight but Certain Councilmen Council-men Will Oppose This Choice The armed neutrality between Mayor Thompson and the City Council is probably prob-ably at an end and all the Indications point to an open renewal of the warfare war-fare that drove nearly all Salt Lakers Into hostile camps and kept them there for months over the removal of Thomas H Hilton and the appointment of Samuel Sam-uel Paul to the position of Chief of the Police department TROUBLE IN SIGHT A review of the old fight would not be profitable but It will be remembered that It took some of the most influential men In the Slate to bring about a truce That truce ended yesterday when Chief Paul sent In his resignation and that resignation was accepted by Mayor Thompson Expressions dropped by members of the Council hist evening make i clear that those In that body who opposed and hampered Mayor Thompson in the first light are eager to resume hostilities and that they will not confirm my man thE I Mayor appoints ap-points unless they are consulted in the matter first MAYOR FAVORS SHEETS I promises lo be the old old story told over again of the Council trying to run the Poliqe department by dictating dictat-ing appointments when the Intent of the law Is to put thai powcri In the hands of the Mayor In the meantime chould1 the battle be prolonged the department de-partment will be In charge of Capt John B Burbldge after tomorrow Tho Mayor would like to have George Sheets at the head of the department and says so The insurgents In thtt Council throw spasms at the very mention of the name of Sheets and there Is I where the first pitched battle Is likely to be fought RESIGNATION AND ACCEPTANCE The decision of the Chief was made known suddenly None of his 1Ien sere s-ere acquainted with his purpose and none of his Intimates had gleaned an Inkling of his Intention He confided the story to an officer who In turn turned it loose upon the streets and by night the story of the Chiefs resignation resigna-tion had been passed through the city Chief Pauls letter to the Mayor it follows as folows x HOI Ezra Thompson Mayor Salt Iuke City Dear Slrl 1 herewith tender mv resignation as Chief of Police to take effect February 20th Hoping thin vIll meet with your approval I remain respectfully re-spectfully SAMUEL PAUL Chief of Police Accompanying the communication once arose He moved that both be referred to the Police and Prison committees com-mittees with power to act and the Mig gcstion was t once acceptedby the Council Sheetss name would not be considered consid-ered by the Council said one of the members of the Police and Prison committee com-mittee While we all respect his ability abil-ity aa an ofllcer he would receive only Ignominious defeat at the hands of the present Council First Sergt John TFtfinpel Is the only ranking Republican on the force said another member and I firmly believe that his name would be recognized Various names were suggested and all found t1 thC ready support or disinterested disinter-ested hammerings No name has been suggested that his met the hearty approbation 1 ap-probation of the entire committee TOO MUCH WORK SAYS CHIEF I have resigned simply because it is Impossible for me to do two things at once and do both of them with satisfaction satisfac-tion to myself wild Chief Paul In his office last night There has been no friction The relations between Mayor Thompson and myself have been very cordial all harmonious and the City treated well I Council ban me very have no complaints to lice of any one The whole fact of the matter Is I that my business Is exacting and I cannot afford to neglect it for the public office which I now hold J you are at all familiar fa-miliar with the livery business you will miiaI know that It demands a great deal of attention The ones time and personal same In true of the police business I am fHmc so young its I once was and It is I too much for mo to work from C in the morning until lute at night I could do It in former days but It la I folly for me to attempt it now In reply to n question the Chief said the recent controversy In regard < < to closing the gamblinghouses and the still more recent affair before the City Council lust Monday night had nothing to do with his decision Ho hud for along a-long time contemplated resigning he long and had merely put Into dellnlte action anc Intention of lonp standing Chief Paul was appointed to his present pres-ent position May 7 1002 succeeding Thoinau Hilton The appointment Y ab made after a long and bitter wrangle between Mayor Thompson and hc City Council and was In the nature oC a compromise SHEETS BEST IN SIGHT When seen at his Brigham street residence Mayor Thompson spoke quite freely concerning the resignation of Chief Paul and some of the men who would probably be considered to fill the vacancy lie gave the Impression that ge he would send In the name of George Sheets as the new Chief but he was careful not to say so In s many worda In my judgment George Sheets Is the best man In sight for the place the Mayor said I will not say that he sili be appointed and I cannot say that he would be confirmed by the Council If he were appointed but at the same time I consider that he Is the best qualified man for the place Of course I have heard hints and Innuendoes against Sheets and If r believed they were true Id be the last man In tho world to appoint him to this or any other Important position but I dont believe they are true POLITICS AGAINST BURBtDGE Speaking of Capt Burbldge Mayor Thompson said It has not been my policy to appoint Democrats and Bur bidge Is a Democrat The mention of exChief Hiltons miino was treated as a Joke bY the Mayor He said he had not discussed the resignation with Chief Paul nt all and knew nothing whatever of the Chiefs reasons for resigning I have only seen Chief Paul once In the past week said the Mayor when he called at my office to consult me regarding re-garding an appointment to be made unL lie told me that he desired to resign re-sign He sent me his resignation to take effect on the 20lh and I accepted it and that Is 1 there Is to the matter |
