Show NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT Yesterday morning we set forth the I facts In regard to the conditions existing i exist-ing In this city as to the peril of our wiring system revealed in striking form by the storm of last Thursday night and called on the Council to take steps to mitigate the danger As I the city ordinances are now being revised re-vised this Is an appropriate time to inaugurate In-augurate the reform of compelling all wiring systems to be put underground and providing an export Inspector who shall be empowered to look Into the wirings in all the buildings especially In the central portion oC the city with a view of having them so placed as to be of the best service and least Imperil the safety of the city and its people and give security to the firemen in the performance of their duty in ease of afire a-fire and cease being an Impediment in and peril in case of fires The great wind and rainstorm of last Thursday night was a sharp reminder of the dangerous condition of this city due to Its Inferior uystem oC conveying electric currents Some of the principal princi-pal streets were strewn with wires many of which carried high voltage while others of lesser current were subject sub-ject to contact making hem equally dangerous As the result of these conditions con-ditions and others of similar character charac-ter the fire department was summoned to extinguish two electric fires In residences resi-dences and were solicited in other cases to come and cut wires that threatened the houses of the occupants Few if any cities the size of Salt Lake would permit the promiscuous stringIng string-Ing of wires in the haphazard manner In which It Is done here and this applies ap-plies equally to the private as well as I the public service for the city and cltl zen are unprotected so far as any official of-ficial Inspection of this character in their interest Not less than two hundred hun-dred wires of miscellaneous kinds maybe may-be counted on single poles located in the business district of the city which In case of a great storm Ot a great fire or both occurring simultaneously something not Improhahlemhht I mean much loss of property or life The growth of the city with consequent conse-quent increased hazard incident thereto there-to demands that proper steps be token t to abate this danger This is something some-thing that should receive the attention of the city authorities and a remedy furnished before it Is too late |
